here.

Most popular at the moment seem to be "I'll tell you what's wrong with feminism" and "If you want to be treated like a lady you'd better start acting like one".

:o

Ooooh!

"Feminists should be focusing on more important issues than pornography."

And

"You're an Ultra Conservative Feminist"

Both from a man...

evenlessnarkypuffin · 17/08/2011 19:01

Where is 'You don't want equality you want dominance?'

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 17/08/2011 19:07

Not sure if this'll show up properly, but here Hmm

LRDTheFeministDragon · 17/08/2011 19:32

Oh, that's just lovely Don'tCall. Hmm

Isn't it depressing when that stuff gets thrown around and it's still ok 'as a joke'.

Can we have: 'But men hunted sabre-tooth tigers back in the day! Their superiority at merchant banking cannot be questioned!'

(I'm sure there's a more elegant way to phrase that, too.)

kickassangel · 17/08/2011 19:39

you see, I don't actually know enough (e.g. stats, famous feminists to quote etc) to rebut these things, except to splutter in rage & disbelief at how blatantly unfair life is, so I rarely discuss feminism in rl.

can we have a 'rebuttal' card (with quotes/stats etc) to throw back at wankers people who say these things?

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 17/08/2011 19:39

Ha, promptly unliked the page when that came up.

We also need a "women like pink because of the fact they used to gather red berries"... And various other anecdotes around that...

giyadas Grin Didn't spot 'men are hardwired to ....' Maybe didn't look hard enough

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 17/08/2011 20:16

"Rape is an adaptation"... What. The. Fuck?

giyadas · 17/08/2011 20:21

Grin no I didn't see one either, but there is 'all human behaviour is hardwired into our genes'. I think that covers a whole load of crappy arguments.

giyadas · 17/08/2011 20:23

that was to Alice - I wasn't grinning at the rape one.

I must be immensely dense - what's the Oscar Wilde one about?

so someone being gay is the same as someone being a rapist? they're both just born that way & can't help their behaviour, but the evil gov will use it against them? Hmm

Surely Wolf wasn't comparing homosexuality with rape, but saying that there was political interest in the outcome of the trial?

kickassangel · 19/08/2011 04:57

Yes but she's chosen 2 sexual crimes of their times, I think her argument would be more persuasive if shed chosen someone who was found innocent of their crime to compare. Wilde WAS gay, surely by comparing the two she implies he IS a rapist?

vesuvia · 19/08/2011 13:04

There's also the "some men / many men / all men" double standard.

When many anti-feminists see or hear many feminists using the word "men", those anti-feminists usually choose to assume wrongly that "men" means "all men".

In most everyday conversation, it is perfectly acceptable for someone to say "there are books on my bookshelf" or "there is food in my fridge". That does not mean that she possesses all the books ever printed or all the food ever produced. She means some books or some food.

A noun without a qualifying quantity does not always mean all examples of that noun. It is often unnecessary to state this because the implication is usually understood and accepted.

(I've deliberately qualified many nouns in my post with some quantities to emphasise how over-the-top it can be to qualify every noun.) Wink

sunshineandbooks · 23/08/2011 01:14

Am loving "The gender dynamics of our savannah ancestors looked curiously like those of 1950s America." Grin

Am a bit Blush though at the "But patriarchy hurts men too" one because I've actually used that line in a bid to get anti-feminists to see that feminism isn't man-hating. Is that ok or do I need to be shot? Wink

vesuvia thanks for that explanation. I always get frustrated by the wilful misinterpretation that we are saying all men or whatever and you've just articulated why beautifully. Cheers!

giyadas · 23/08/2011 02:06

There's a difference though, between 'Patriarchy hurts men too' and 'patriarchy hurts men too so what are you bothering about wimmin for when you should be worried about the real victims, us poor men(z) .
I think you're safe Grin

kickassangel · 23/08/2011 02:07

actually, i think that patriarchy both benefits & damages men - if they have any interest in being the best person they can be, it narrows their options too much, and pushes them into a stereotype they may well be unhappy with.
