I'm a dunderhead and I don't know how to do links Blush but seriously, you have to have a look at this article. It's entitled 'If you're too bolshy to put on lippy, why should any firm give you a job?'

My jaw is usually on the floor when reading her foul, self-obsessed, misogynist guff but she has truly surpassed herself this time. Or maybe it's some kind of brilliant self-parody..... Hmm

OP posts:
TheFarSideOfFuck · 05/07/2011 16:27

she is just a wind-up merchant

she does very well out of it, apparently

best ignored, IMO

oh, she is also an ugly bitch (did I say that out loud ...?)

PurpleStrawberry · 05/07/2011 16:28

I posted a link earlier in the original Harrods thread.

They're not posting my comment, probably as I was rude about her!

givemushypeasachance · 05/07/2011 16:36

I understand and support client-facing organisations that have dress codes that say you need to look clean and tidy, smart and professional. But I don't think that a "full face" of slap is necessary for a woman to look professional. How outdated and bloody patronising is that? It smacks of women having to be shut away with their curlers in and not daring to take out the bins or buy a pint of milk before they've spent an hour painting on their eyebrows because being seen with just what nature presented them with would scare the horses.

If you absolutely feel you must insist on women being painted up to sell your products for you then you should also insist that any male employees do the same, in the same way that organisations shouldn't insist that women must wear skirts/dresses while men can wear trousers.

allosaurusrex · 05/07/2011 16:37

For those who think that Liz had a point, if you read the original story it is made clear that at the inteview she told them she didn't want to wear make-up and they okayed it. She then proceeded to work for them without issue for 5 years, not wearing make-up but adhering to the rest of the dress code. It was only when senior management did a "floor walk" or whatever that someone picked her up on it and made it a problem. Think her legal argument is that having allowed someone to act in a certain way at work for 5 years you can't suddenly change it without warning (even if it is not exactly what is written in the contract, something about behaviour being allowed because it had become custom).

AlpinePony · 05/07/2011 16:45

When I left school in 1990 I wanted (dreamed) of a job in Harrods - it was good money at the time, 210 a week starting salary and you were given a good quality uniform.

I didn't even apply because I knew I didn't have "the look". Much in the same way as you don't see so many size 24 air stewards.

A girl from my school did get a job there, very, very pretty, left a couple of years later though when an ancient Egyptian man wouldn't take no for an answer.

CrapolaDeVille · 05/07/2011 16:47

Liz Jones...... is she ironically talking about beauty? Seriously that woman needs to get mirrors in that glass house.

SybilBeddows · 05/07/2011 16:48

exactly Givemushypeas.

many men have blotchy skin and would look prettier with a more even skin tone, some (gasp) even have acne.
a touch of subtle mascara would bring their eyes out nicely too.
But it is not expected of them.

MollysChamber · 05/07/2011 16:49

I don't normally make statements such as this but I feel I am justified.

Liz Jones has a face like a smacked arse.

Feel much better now.

As you were.

TheFarSideOfFuck · 05/07/2011 16:51

Molly, I never make statements like "she is an ugly bitch" either

but she is ugly inside and out

and a wind-up merchant

Ormirian · 05/07/2011 16:51

Look. If I turn up for an interview in grubby clothes, stinking with spinach stuck to my teeth I'd not really expect to be given a customer-facing job. But otherwise does it really matter? What if Harrods said no-one without an onyx nose-ring and a spider tattoo could get a job?

wrongdecade · 05/07/2011 17:04

the title made me LOL tbh

I hope shes actually like a really good self parody

wrongdecade · 05/07/2011 17:12

just read it
where shes says 'showing her open pores and ruddy complexion'

shes awfully critical about other people looks when in her case I've seen better looking bulldogs chewing wasps.

AlpinePony · 05/07/2011 17:23

Is this the "Women's Rights/Feminism" board?

Because all I'm seeing is women sniping about Liz Jones' looks! Shock Way to go sisters!

verylittlecarrot · 05/07/2011 17:26

The question should probably not be "should she have adhered to a dress code" but rather "is it legal or right that a company can demand makeup of only its female employees without feeling the full weight of gender discrimination laws upon it?"

Time to evolve, Harrods. Demand that ALL your employees are presentable and groomed, by all means.
Discriminate so obviously by demanding that the WOMEN wear makeup? How can this be legal?

Makeup does not equal good grooming. At all.

AuntieMonica · 05/07/2011 17:27

i agree Alpine but i would call Liz Jones ugly, in her language, in her perception and her opinion

CrapolaDeVille · 05/07/2011 17:32

Alpine.....Don't you think feminists are allowed to criticise a woman who is such a vile piece of work?

effingwotnots · 05/07/2011 17:36

Wearing even a little make-up shows respect to others

Fucking hell!

TheFarSideOfFuck · 05/07/2011 17:36

that is very true, AP, but I think anyone that attempts to make women feel like shit, in the way she does, deserves to have it right back at her

I hadn't realised this was on the Feminist board, tbh (I have a long list of Threads open)

however, she is a professional shit-stirrer and has done more for the anti-feminist cause in the course of her "writing" than a few casual insults on an anonymous board could ever do

SybilBeddows · 05/07/2011 17:47

I'm agreeing with AlpinePony. Non-sexist criticisms would be better....

Can I point out, though, that not all the people on this thread are feminism regulars so if anyone is looking at it and saying 'what a bunch of hypocrites' please bear in mind that people saying stuff may not necessarily self-identify as feminists Smile

TheFarSideOfFuck · 05/07/2011 17:56

Yes, they would Sybil

Like I said, I didn't realise at first this was in the Feminist section

boysrock · 05/07/2011 18:00

Doomed if you do and doomed if you dont.
I am aware of someone in my organisation who has been reprimanded and had a complaint put in because she had make up on.

From all accounts it wasn't over the top or "a face full of slap"
Men don't have these restrictions imposed so why should we.

Exactly what would be wrong with every woman going make up free for a day? Now there's a radical thought.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 05/07/2011 18:01

Liz Jones is talking out of her backside again.

Why would wearing a full face of makeup make anyone any better at their job?. I worked in a banking environment (without any make up on) and all the customers really cared about were having any complaints readily responded to and receiving their funds in good time

This lady who left actually worked in the HMV store within Harrods on their third floor and had been there for some years. It was some Harrods jobsworth doing a floor walk that pulled her up for infringing their code i.e not wearing any makeup, the lady herself has no issues with HMV.

I think this lady has a very good case if she were to decide to take Harrods to an employment tribunal.
