Why isn't Prince Philip, King?

I know because he always has his foot in him mouth but apart from that. I'm not suggesting he should be the monarch, just wondered why he doesn't have the title of King. If/when Prince William come to the throne his wife will have the title of Queen, won't she?

I once read that in some pacific islands where Pidgin English is spoken, his designation is 'him fella belong Queen'. Grin Though of course there's also an island where he's considered to be a divine being...

I thought the Queen Mother was so called because she was a Queen in her own right as well as being the mother of the current Queen; so King Mother wouldn't make sense in the same way because she wouldn't ever have been King, iyswim. So just say that QE2 decided to abdicate in favour of Prince Charles, she would be Queen Mother again, I suppose, but not King Mother.
Confused

Grimma will correct me if I am wrong, but I think it may be the Isle of Wight.

Queen mother was indeed because she was Queen (consort).

Queen Mary, the current Queen's grandmother, was never styled anything other than Queen Mary. The Queen mother thing only arose because they would have had 2 Queens with the same name otherwise.

And the word queen has lost all meaning.

Its a 'cargo cult' on an island called Tanna.
