Music by women

I've decided to seek out female artists to listen to. The music industry is so male dominated, with women often only tolerated if they act out male fantasy, so I'm going to seek out the women's voice.

The final push was hearing the Beyonce is the first woman to headline the main stage at Glastonbury ever. That's 'right on' Glastonbury. And that is ever.

So if anyone would like to join me, and share recommendations, please do. Really please do as my recommendations thus far will be pitiful. Grin

Tori Amos.
Her album "Little earthquakes" is fantastic (sample ). "Strange Little Girls" is also very interesting, she sings 12 songs originally written by men from a female perspective, including Eminem's Bonnie and Clyde.

is her singing Joni Mitchell, another favourite.

My daughters are named after a couple of female singer/ songwriters P(olly) j Harvey and Maddy Prior ... I admire many women in the music industry as it must be tough - but I don't actively seek out women to.listen too just good music. I love Kate Bush, PJ, Bjork, Kim Deal and Kim Gordon (sonic youth) though they all amazing in very different ways.

LilBB - no not banished as you have lots which is a good thing Grin

Women are between a rock and a hard place in music, so I'm not going to condemn them for sometimes doing what they're expected to.

Also lots of strong women in mixed male/female bands
eg
Lamb
Mates of State
Low

Oh yes, I love Lamb - look up Lou Rhodes as she's doing solo stuff now too.

I adore Sia - her personality as well as her music. I found a live studio recording of The Girl You Lost To Cocaine that made my heart sing. I'll see if I can find it again to do a link. The visuals of the official video are too distracting I think.

sayanything, your post about Tori Amos singing the male songs reminded me of

Stina Nordenstam

Her album People Are Strange is a load of covers, all completely different from the originals including Purple Rain (Prince), I Came So Far for Beauty (Leonard Cohen - love it) and, of course, People Are Strange by The Doors

One of my favorite bands is fronted by a woman, Save Ferris. They're kind of Ska, it's great upbeat misi and her voice is truly amazing.
