Here A modest run of success by a few highly talented young women is surely not enough to justify the writer's 'concern'. Is it?

"This trend should undoubtedly be celebrated; for too long female playwrights have been sidelined, and it is exciting to see so many young writers ? of whatever sex ? producing fresh and engaging work."

But obviously women winning this promising playwright award for the last 5 years is enough? 'Ladies, you've done your bit, now let the men take over'

"Whatever the reason, it is a situation worth probing. It is uncomfortable to see any one demographic dominating new writing, whatever race, age or sex. Tribes, Spur of the Moment and That Face : all are accomplished plays, but each share remarkably similar themes of family and sexual politics. Variety in the makeup of our young playwrights might encourage work that is more diverse in both subject and tone."

Oh my goodness, I hope he cringes when he reads this back to himself!

So, he's uncomfortable with any demographic dominating (new writing) - but this is the particular example he's chosen. And women only write about family and sexual politics. We need big men to write about big important themes obviously.

These bloikes are always uncomfortable with one demographic dominating a media or arts sector, unless that demographic is whilte males.

In which case, they don't notice. When 5 women come along and get noticed among the 5000 men, they start bleating about wimmin taking over.

Strewth.
