Hooters in Bristol - M&S and bikini contests

Dear all

Bristol Hooters has held its "inaugural" bikini contest. It started at 7pm on Wednesday and children are allowed in until 9pm.

Many people have complained to the police and to the Council because this breaches the licence conditions, which state:

From the notes of the licensing hearing.

Gallus? lawyer said: ?There isn?t anything about this that undermines the protection of children. I realise it is not for everyone. It is a restaurant with a uniform. Not a strip club. The uniform is not relevant to the licencing application.?

From the licence written decision:

Licence condition number 13: There shall be no adult entertainment or services, activities, other entertainment or matters ancillary to the use of the premises that may give rise to concern in respect of children. For example (but not exclusively), there shall be no nudity or semi-nudity, films for restricted age groups, the presence of gaming machines.

We think that this breaches the licensing condition above and one of the four licensing objectives - the protection of children from harm.

We're waiting to see if the Council/police will be taking any action.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Marks & Spencer again for helping Hooters to set up in Bristol.

As if it's not bad enough to have to put up with the breastaurant with the huge owl sign with a slang words for breasts and "comical" wobbly breasts for eyes, we now have to put up with bikini contests, the associated advertising and the subsequent delightful comments on the Hooters Facebook page from slavering men, e.g. "Beep beep slip slap balls deep bare back I'm in"

Many in Bristol are still boycotting M&S. One woman got an e-mail from M&S today saying, "we notice that you haven't been shopping with us recently." Funnily enough, they might find that many of us have decided not to shop in M&S since they decided to help inflict Hooters on our city.

Just wondering who the "we" are - if there's a group opposing the continuing existence of this mindsore I'd very much like to lend my support.

Urgh...!
Where is this bloody dive and what was M&S' involvement in getting it set up, Jess?

Hi Chrisonabike & Immaculada
We are a group of Bristol feminists. Last year the Bristol Feminist Network was involved along with Bristol Fawcett. The latest complaints have been made as individuals until we next meet up as a group.

Basically, Marks and Spencer sublet what was a 'Simply Food' store to Hooters. There were huge numbers of complaints at the time but M&S had already signed up to the deal (we think) and had no plans to back out.

Here are some links that might be of interest:

They say that every comment is important to them...but clearly some are more important than others!

Thanks Jess, really interesting.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 13/05/2011 20:27

Cheers for that, Jess

Warning - do not read the comments!

We have a policy now of not commenting on these stories now because it just encourages people to troll. They usually have no interest in hearing the arguments from those who are concerned about places like Hooters.
