Representation of women in the new Scottish Parliament

All the results aren't in yet but as of lae last night there seemed to be a good proportion of women winning seats.

Historically the Scottish Parliament has had a higher proportion of women than Westminster.

The gender balance is IMO one of the strengths of the Scottish Parliament.

It is disappointing that this angle on the results is being ignored by the media.

Why do you think it is? Is it due to PR?

It's actually looking like the proportion of women will decrease.

Alice - we have both FPTP and PR in the Scottish Parliament.

I was watching this morning and I think it was one of the Glasgow constituencies that had 4 female and one male candidate. The male came last. I smiled.

The Scottish Parliament seems to be more progessive overall.

Edinburgh is nearer home than London so seems more family friendly (for both women and men).

It's easier to design a system that the people want if it is small and began not in the distant past but now therefore not having to cowtow to tradition.

I truly believe that in Scotland we want to live in a fair society (yes, I have rose tinted specs on and yes I have been caught up in the moment).

one of my friends has just stood down, it was UNBELIEVABLE the demands that being an MSP made on her time. no way could you have a family and be out 5 nights a week plus available to the media the whole time.

Yama · 06/05/2011 23:48

Yeah I couldn't do it Aitch. Maybe when the dc have grown up ...

AitchTwoOh · 07/05/2011 13:28

another chum has just got in at 47, one kid in late secondary, the other at uni. that's the perfect age i reckon.

dont most 47 yos these days have primary school aged DCs? (esp the 'career' ones who are more likely to go into politics)

Looks like Wales is down to I think 24 or 25 out of 60 AMs though :( (not sure exactly as some unisex names).

A few years back there was a 50:50 split, not sure what has happened - possibly more women candidates with Plaid, who have done badly this time?
