Children's films with good female leads

Sorry if this has already been done. I was wondering if anyone can recommend any films with good female lead roles. My DD is 2, coming up on 3 and DS is 1. We have quite a few Miyazaki films which seem pretty good (Kiki's Delivery Service, Ponyo, Spirited Away) and Mulan. The Princess and the Frog isn't bad. What else can people think of? I'm sure there are more with good roles in them but can't remember them all.

Ok, you will probably all want to shoot me, But:
Barbie and the Three Musketeers.
Barbie is refused training as a musketeer, her and three serving girls train in secret, rescue the prince and then she rides of to do some more 'saving' just as the prince is trying to ask her out!

Barbie and the Diamond Castle
Two friends have their own business, it gets ruined they get involved in an adventure, solve the problems and everything is all right again.

Has anyone mentioned Scooby Doo? Obviously the star is the dog, but as far as female characters go, Daphne is a bit of a wimp, but Thelma is the smart one. Lots and lots and lots of animated shorts and films, plus the two live-action films. Good for 3 or 4 onwards, I think (live action ones a bit scarier).

Shrek - princess fiona is brilliant
Nims island
Racing stripes
High school musical
Despicable me

Besom, I would say that High School Musical is suitable for the same age range as a lot of the films mentioned here. I would say the core age range for watching it is 5-8. The characters are in some ways (but not all) quite childlike, rather than representing real teens.

I think the Ice Princess (Disney) is okay, but more for tweens than very young children. Almost all of the characters and interaction is between women and girls, and a lot of it is about mother-daughter relationships. The female characters are varied Although the main character does give up her chance to study Physics in order to be an ice skater, the secondary character gives up her chance to be an ice skater in order to improve her academic performance and have a chance at college.

Not Despicable Me surely? The central theme of that movie seems to be "Even though he's a complete selfish bastard, you should put yourself in serious danger to save him from himself!" Ugh.

Nim's Island is very cool. And, as one-dimensional as the characters are, I do think Gabriella in HSM isn't too shabby as a role model.

RainbowShite · 05/05/2011 23:09

I thought the girls in despicable me were strong characters.

GColdtimer · 06/05/2011 01:25

How about the incredibles?

I'm not keen on the Incredibles either: the shy girl finds her power and confidence and thus - a boyfriend [head-desk].

Lola in Charlie and Lola is no pushover. I also think the lad about town pretty much meets his match in the Aristocats. This also concerns me and agree with comment about less TV/film exposure for girls the better esp after seeing things like ben10 and bakugan. Now Dds are older we have introduced them to Wonderwoman and Xena warrior princess. About to move on to Buffy the vampire slayer.

I was going to say the Barbie films too-in all of them the heroines are clever and brave and save the day-and the music is lovely in the ballet based ones
