Aaah, does anyone have a copy of The Handmaid's Tale and a few minutes spare?

I'm handing an essay in tomorrow on The Handmaid's Tale and another book. I've finished it, but I thought to myself "Oh, I can't be bothered writing down all these page numbers when I'm mid-flow, I'll stick a bookmark in and go through at the end..." which is what I usually do and it's normally fine, only I've left my copy of The Handmaid's Tale in my car and my brother's driven it to France. Completely my own fault and utterly useless of me but I had lots of book to unpack, he was rushing to catch his ferry, and it must have just been left behind Blush

If I list the quotes I've used (there are only a few from HMT) would anyone please, please mind checking the page references for me? I don't think it would take too long, but there are no copies in the university library and it would save my life. Or at least my module grade.

sorry I can't help you, I gave my copy away to a friend...
good luck anyway, I loved the book, really made me think a lot.

giyadas · 02/05/2011 14:16

I have a copy. Am happy to help if I can.

Scootergrrrl · 02/05/2011 14:22

I have one too. Maybe you could divide the load between us? Or we could have a race!

ComeAlongPond · 02/05/2011 14:23

Thank you anyway mousy :) It's such a great book, isn't it!

Thanks giyadas! The pages I'm looking for are:

When they first mention 'gender traitors' hanging on the wall;
The passage at the beginning (I think it's the end of the first chapter) where Offred mentions that they would whisper their names in the Red Centre;
The part where Offred remarks that it's amazing what can become normal and accepted;
The section in the 'historical notes' where the Professor mentions the underground femaleroad.

Thank you so much :)

Don't forget to reference the edition that the person helping you has when it comes to your bibliography.

Scootergrrrl · 02/05/2011 14:27

My edition is the Virago 1987. The page number for the end of chapter one is page 14, where they whisper their names. More soon...

AliceWorld · 02/05/2011 14:29

I just ran up stairs to get my book, slipped at the top, trapped my hand in the radiator controls, cried with pain till my husband came to get me, and am now recovering with a cup of tea.

Whispering names is pg 14 in my edition. London: Vintage, 1996.

giyadas · 02/05/2011 14:30

historical notes - pg 313

Oh, I missed one - also the salvaging, where the women kill the man who was convicted of rape but was actually on their side?

Sorry to be a nuisance.

We should have run a book on this!

Poor Alice, I hope your hand is okay, although I had a little LOL at your description of your misadventure..!

AliceWorld · 02/05/2011 14:55

My hand is now recovered although I am anticipating bruising. (It was a bit funny Grin, especially when my husband wanted to know what book I wanted (so he could help me) but I am so meant to be working and there as no way the Handmaid's tale would fit into that)

I'm stuck on the others. Not read the book for a looong time.

ComeAlongPond · 02/05/2011 14:59

Well I'm glad your hand is all right, Alice. Thank you so so much for your help!

the hanging of the man - pg 290-292 ? Did you want all of that bit or just a specific page?

giyadas · 02/05/2011 15:28

Offreds remark -There's a short passage that starts "Is that how we lived then? But we lived as usual" on pg 66. Is that the bit you wanted? Or there's a bit later which is a few pages long describing the governments actions.

ComeAlongPond · 02/05/2011 15:28

Thank you :) The whole chunk is fine for that bit. Thank you very much.

ComeAlongPond · 02/05/2011 15:32

The 'but we lived as usual' section was the one I was looking for, that's fab.
