Bit late for any inciteful commentary, but women soldiers are more at risk of rape by their colleagues than the enemy. Mr James doesn't mention that, does he?

Sounds like male soldiers are also at risk of sexual assault by their colleagues too. I know that rape is a weapon of war, but I'm not quite sure why rape is likely in a combat situation. Surely all soldiers are at risk of harm on the front line, and their colleagues, male or female are likely to want to save them if possible? Given the physical requirements required for infantry type roles the 'escorts' line is really incredibly insulting.

From the way he tells it, you get this impression: there you are, a man facing a group of men and women enemy soldiers, all trying to kill you in close combat, so what do you do? Try to defend yourself? Run away? No. You decide to have a quick rape of the nearest woman soldier, despite the proximity of her colleagues and presumably her weaponry.

I thought that the civilian populace were more likely to be at risk of rape during war. What this man seems to be saying is "women, you shouldn't have the right to defend yourselves, because we men are so gallant, we'll try and save you if you get attacked."

This is on top of a recent case in the local media about a young cadet who had sex with another cadet. Unbeknownst to the female cadet, six of his friends were watching next door via Skype.

Hence, I think, the hysteria.

As someone who has only recently moved to Australia, I would hate for all the men here to be tarred with the same brush. I haven't yet met anyone who called me/womankind anything derogatory and I am frankly amazed at how many guys do school drop offs/pick ups. Certainly way more than 'back home'.

So whilst there may be misogynists around they aren't every man in Australia - not by a long chalk.

But GapsA, that is what makes it so grotesque - that this is someone who has reached some position of import and these are his views, which he freely bandies round like it is 1970...
