Are we still OK for 'The Bloody Chamber' by Angela Carter on 13th April at 9pm?

And for May Northanger Abbey?

I am utterly rubbish at this publicising/organising lark btw so if anyone else was desperately looking for something to post on AIBU/Twitter/Facebook...

I love Angela Carter for reasons entirely to do with Wise Children so I'm not hugely objective about her.

Maybe we should have done The Sadian Woman...

I couldn't find my copy so I will be commenting from memory.

MitchiestInge · 13/04/2011 19:52

à propos of, well nothing really, have just realised it is actually nearly 20 years since Carter died Shock

still have the most massive crush on her, and Lorna Sage a bit

Have you read Love? Carter herself admitted it was v misogynistic. God there must be another word for it.

MitchiestInge · 13/04/2011 20:27

I mean years later, she probably thought it wasn't at the time. It's vile really.

oh this is one of those books that confused me as a teenager because it was meant to be feminist and it was published by Virago but the messages I was getting out of it weren't.
same with Magic Toyshop.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 13/04/2011 20:37

stunningly evocative and well-written, though.

Unrulysun · 13/04/2011 20:56

I just think she's an astonishing writer. The way The Bloody Chamber weaves fairytale and gothic and really aberrant horrible sexuality is amazing. And a great title too. But she's a writer not a sociologist so I can imagine that maybe she might have pissed off some theorists. Is your disquiet there in the text? Where would you say it fails to be feminist?

Unrulysun · 13/04/2011 20:58

I also feel from her writing that she loves women iyswim?
