should we have a women's (political) party like they do in Sweden?

Id like to see one. Would def get my vote. I think it would probably work better in the devolved parliaments than westminster, though.

Northern Ireland Women's Coalition anyone?

No I do not agree with this. This sets women apart as a minority group unable to participate in mainstream so-called "men's" politics. Women are not a minority and we should be battling to have our non-minority issues respected within the normal political parties, not marginalising ourselves.
We make up half the population and cast half the vote, we don't need some outsider no hoper party. We need the current parties to get on board with what we want.

Weve had a century of that, kat, and it hasnt worked. Sweden has a womens party and the most female-friendly policies in europe.

Yes but do the womens party have seats in parliament? I would not like to vote for a party that had an about zero chance of being able to represent my interests. I agree with the green party in principle but they also have no chance of getting parliamentary seats.
I agree that our policies are not female friendly. I am not sure a womens party that could not actually achieve parliamentary seats would change that. More female MPs, quotas for female MPs etc might do a better job.
If having a womens party would work I'd be all for it but I can't see them ever getting into power in our current parliament. We need more women in our current parties in my opinion.

No I don't think so because there is little chance of a such party of having any electoral success at all.

sAf, had I won the Euromillions last night, that's exactly what I would have done. That and setting up a trust for rape victims to pursue civil claims. And jumping on a plane to the Caribbean.

I think the problem would be that such a party would be seen as a single issue one and they don't tend to do very well with the electorate. And feminism is scary, innit.

AyeRobot · 26/03/2011 11:31

Actually, I did win on Euromillions, but I don't think £5.40 will get a candidate very far.

Independent candidates wouldn't have any bettter chance than a feminist party IMO.
