I began talking to the young women (probaby 18/19 yrs)who was working there about the lack of feminist books and ended up having a 20 minute conversation with her; she was extrememly knowledgable and recomended me a list of must read books.

Thought I'd share as it really cheered me up

what were the books?

karmakameleon · 19/03/2011 13:25

I was surprised to see THe Equality Illusion was part of the 3 for 2 offer there yesterday. I thought that was quite positive.

thefinerthingsinlife · 19/03/2011 13:31

Nina Power - One dimentional women

Judith Butler - gender trouble
- Bodies that matter

Camille Paglia - Sexual personae

Jane M Ussher - Fantasies of feminity.

Really Karma? That is good!

Yes, it was. Not very prominently displayed (hidden in the sociology section) but it was part of the offer.

BertieBotts · 19/03/2011 13:34

The Equality Illusion was on a big display at the front of the bookshop at Uni the other day :) I bought a copy.

msrisotto · 19/03/2011 16:09

I bought The Spirit Level on 3 for 2 in Waterstones yesterday.

I have a copy of Sexual Personae on the bookshelf that I've never got around to reading. Don't know where it came from - think it might have been my brother's actually! I might give it a go now, though Grin

thefinerthingsinlife · 19/03/2011 18:30

The only place you can really get feminist books is online which is a shame because I like to pick a book up flick through it etc. before I buy it.

ah, the Silver Moon women's bookshop!

Camille Paglia is one of those very annoying people who isn't a feminist but people outside feminism assume she is (woman with short hair who talks about women's issues) and use her as evidence that firstly even feminists don't think feminism is needed any more, secondly that they say idiotic stuff and thirdly that they can't agree about anything.

Blackduck · 21/03/2011 09:42

Silver Moon - funny was only just thinking about that the other day! I have a t-shirt from there 'The future is female, and she's pissed off'....

slug · 21/03/2011 09:54

Ahh the Silver Moon bookshop. I used to hide in the basement and read the Rita Mae Browns when I was unemployed and skint

suwoo · 21/03/2011 09:56

Is Jeanette Winterson a feminist?

vouvrey · 21/03/2011 10:25

I think so.

There was a thread a while ago about feminist books, or lack of them, in shops.

Urban charity bookshops, esp in Uni towns tend to stock a few. Charity shops in small towns NEVER have any Sad.

Waterstones is very variable. Some will have 1, some have 1 shelf.

Libraries are even worse, unless you go to the women's libraries in London and Glasgow.

AyeRobot · 21/03/2011 10:41

I found "The Whole Woman" in a small town charity shop Grin. Oh, and "The Female Eunuch" too. That's it, though. It's usually wall to wall chick lit and Dan Brown.

I agree with the libraries being shocking. Actually, I am usually really surprised by the stock in my local libraries. Loads of cosmic ordering type books in each one yet only one copy (if I'm lucky) of stuff I want to read (Smile, usually in another library in the area so I have to order it. Harrumph.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 21/03/2011 10:49

when I was growing up the county library was fab. Lots and lots of Women's Press fiction.
there must have been a feminist librarian.

vouvrey · 21/03/2011 11:10

Is the Women's Press still going?

slug · 21/03/2011 11:19

yes
