why are periods used as an insult/put down?

used to embarass women and 'win' an argument?

i just want to clarify something about my OP. the insult was not used in response to me expressing an opinion or anything. it was literally used to embarass me and make me go away. some men just like making women feel bad.

this is basically what happened. a friend of mine had a cold last weekend and remarked on FB that he had the 'man flu' we joked about it and all was well. a couple of days later i came down with the cold and while talking to a mutual friend (friend no2) on FB i mentioned that i wasn't feeling great. he asked what was wrong and i joked that friend no1 had given me his man flu. friend no3 who hadn't been party to any of these conversation came on and posted "men only. women have their tampons, we have man flu remedy. we are even" i responded something about, not being sure of the relevance of tampons with regards to a common cold but that he was free to put a tampon up his nose if he thought it would help. he is a twat. he lacks the intelligence to be able to understand why his comment was so stupid.

this wasn't even about me being more outspoken than usual this was an unprovoked, uninvited insult just because he saw a woman and thought he'd take her down a peg or two.

sadly it is lost on this particular individual. i dont mind a battle of wits, but when your oponent is unarmed it's no fun at all.

even more depressing was to know that he will go on to convince more women, and probably his daughters too, that this is what they should expect in men, that there are no 'nicer' men, tehy are all the same as him and they should be grateful tehy have one as witty as he is. (he actually responded to one of my replies that he was aware his wit intimidated me Confused there was no wit in anything he said)

AyeRobot · 18/03/2011 21:56

Does he use the word "banter" as well?

BooyHoo · 18/03/2011 21:59

haven't heard that one yet but i have blocked him from seeing any of my posts so i hopefully wont have any more intereferance from him.

BTW i know i 'know' you aye, but i can't work out 'who' you are.

PeterAndreForPM · 18/03/2011 22:06

I am watching "I, Robot" right now

and I am on my period, coincidentally

I know, not really relevant Smile

AyeRobot · 18/03/2011 22:06

I don't think you do, BooyHoo. Not a "name" at all. I'm just a common or garden angry feminst. Grin

Well handled, btw. I get you, even if others don't.

AyeRobot · 18/03/2011 22:07

Heh, PAFM. I've never seen it. The film or, erm, oops. No, just the film.

BooyHoo · 18/03/2011 22:10

also watching Irobot but not on period (almost wish i was, it might help explain why my dad had me in tears today, but no, i have to admit it was all him)

aye, i was almost sure i 'knew' you. your posting style seems/feels really familiar. did you go by any other names?

PeterAndreForPM · 18/03/2011 22:10

I was notjustapotforsoup for a bit, but it was too unwieldy. I like that I have a "style", though.

For the record, I'm not watching I, Robot, nor am I on my period.

I joke about levels of testosterone in the office (4 men and me). OMG, you should have seen what happened to this bunch of usually quite mild mannered men when I asked them about taking DS paintballing!

The thing with my PMT is that my periods are so irregular that I don't know until after the event that my mood was PMT. I actually stormed out of the office last week and had a cry in the loo I was so frustrated about something. Only on Sunday when my period arrived (only the second one since I had DS in March 2009) did I make the connection.

I actually wouldn't really mind the men in my office commenting that I had been mardy or whatever, but if my DH uses it against me it drives me mad. NO, I'm not hormonal, you are just driving me beserk!

Unrulysun · 18/03/2011 22:27

I'm watching I Robot on +1. Dh and I are doing shifts with dd who has a cold. He is downstairs entertaining our weekend guests and I am here with a sleeping snotty person, Will Smith and a chocolate and banana pancake. Dreadful stuff childcare. :)

I was just wondering whether AyeRobot would be watching I Robot and trying to do other Yorkshire film titles.

Sorry - massive hijack. :)

AyeRobot · 18/03/2011 22:32

Unrulysun - the name did come from a "Yorkshire Film Titles" game played on a long journey.

bonkers20, male hormones are generally seen to be OK, though. Lots of excuses made for excess testosterone.

bronze · 18/03/2011 22:36

Theres a big difference between saying 'sorry I'm a bit snappy because... '
and 'oh you must be on your period' just because you happened to disagree with them

bronze · 18/03/2011 22:37

whoops sorry
it wasn't showing a second page for some reason

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 18/03/2011 22:39

rofl, I have always wondered about AyeRobot.
in a similar vein, dh thinks since we are in Yorkshire, our feminist group should greet each other by saying 'Now then sisters!' and go around wearing flat caps.

AyeRobot · 18/03/2011 22:44

Heh! I say "N'athen" (or however you'd spell it) a lot. And "I'll si thi" when I leave. You should do it! I'm going to PM you about your group....

mathanxiety · 19/03/2011 05:42

'also watching Irobot but not on period (almost wish i was, it might help explain why my dad had me in tears today, but no, i have to admit it was all him)'

See what happened just there?
