Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

The group I want to start

So, the first meeting I arranged didn't go ahead because I was ill. So now I want to set a new date, but I want an idea of how the meeting/s will go. I think we need to start with it being a discussion group, and if any activism comes out of that, then that's great, but I am concerned that activism as a primary goal will put people off, when we can see clearly that people don't really understand a lot of feminist issues in the first place!

A friend has suggested that I find an article to email round anyone who wants to attend, for them to read beforehand, and for us to discuss during the meeting. And then let the conversation meander from that article. I'm trained and experienced in facilitating group discussions, so that should work well from my perspective, and I can choose the article carefully to make it more likely that a feminist issue will be discussed than another (if we've already discussed a few IYSWIM).

I guess sort of like a book group, but with less homework Grin, which might put people off!

What do you think? And what might be a good article to read to start off with? I'm sure I'll get good at finding good articles as time goes on, but could do with some help from you lovely lot to give me a head start!

Thank you! Does that mean you don't think it's a daft idea?

Hmm...both fab articles I agree. I'm leaning more towards the first one, though, as the second looks like it could lead to a very broad discussion and not get into the nitty-gritty of any issue in particular IYSWIM.

I'm going to print out and re-read and notate the housework one as a distinct possibility for the first meeting.

I think emailing round an article is a top idea. It's like having a book group but makes it easier for them.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 14/03/2011 19:51

Blimey, FB, you're really on a roll! Sounds like a great plan, good luck!

Someone here said they were worried about going to their local group because they thought it would be all reading and theory. So emailing an article round might put some people off. Personally I would suggest something less formal and led. (Will PM too)

FlamingoBingo · 14/03/2011 22:22

Hmm...I see what you mean, Alice, but I think that was referring to books. I'm thinking more like newspaper articles - not highbrow, scary stuff. And I was thinking I'd make it clear in the email that it would be very group-led and that reading the article in question would not be a pre-requisite for joining the group, but that it might just provide us with an opportunity to find something to discuss each week - a starting point.

Dittany - thank you! Smile

Immaculada - not sure if the blog will materialise any time soon...was just something I was thinking about. The group has been something I've been planning for a while. I have enough interested friends to make it worth starting, and if we get a few newbies invovled at some point, then I'll be over the moon!

Phew! Email/FB event sent out! Must remember to send it to the editor of the local newspaper too, actually.

It's 17 April, so got a long time to wait!

Another idea: The whole of the intro to Reclaiming the F Word is now available online from the publisher:

zed-books.blogspot.com/2010/05/reclaiming-f-word-by-catherine-redfern_19.html

Do a meeting around this & then see if people want to go on & read the whole book?

Fab, thanks David Smile

Just a boring point if you did use the Pat Mainari one (which I love). To back up what Dittany said about hardly anything changing in forty years - it was reproduced and circulated at the very beginning of the British second wave in Shrew/London Women's Liberation Newsletter (one of those, I think) as a talking point.

ps - i am not that old though so I don't know what those original discussion groups on it were like.
