Should pictures like this (violence against women) be shown?

I was just on the Sun website, reason irrelevant, but on the front page there was a thumbnail picture of this article about Tirion Lewis, who was beaten up by her boyfriend. The picture shocked me, because although of course I know violence against women exists, I've never seen it so clearly in-your-face before, if that makes sense? It just brought it home to me and made me feel very angry and upset.

The picture is here, warning, it is extremely graphic and is distressing.

It just made me think - should pictures like this be in the public domain? Does it help to see the real effects of domestic violence, or is it just sensationalising it? I can't decide what I think about it. That poor girl :( and thousands like her. :( Angry

Ah, thanks, Shaving, that explains it :)

Janos

I'm assuming she agreed the release - I think the second link refers back to the original reporting and mentions the pictures. Will go and re-read as that's how I interpreted it.

The opening paragraph in the second report is:

"THE image that shocked Wales of a young woman lying bloodied and bruised on a hospital bed is virtually unrecognisable from the beautiful Tirion Lewis who is recovering today"

I'm guessing the family agreed the release of the picture or they wouldn't have agreed to the interview?

I doubt a journo could have got a sneaky picture of her in the hospital and only the hospital, Police or family would have been in possession of a picture like that.

It says here that the Police released the picture and they wouldn't do that without the consent of the family

Ah right I see.

I think she's incredibly brave to allow that, really, and it's great she has so much support behind her.
