Confused about the extended sentences for rape in a 'safe place'

Have I missed something here?

I was being a bit outraged about the idea of 'safe places' somehow it's less of a violation or crime if it's in a public place. Isn't that a bit 'women should stay in their houses if they don't want to be raped?'

I hope I'm not being stupid, but surely we should be 'safe' everywhere?

I agree the reality for women is that much violence does happen in the home and this doesn't help them. Although the principle that it should be a safe place might lead to higher sentencing for domestic violence.

What I'm disagreeing with is that they are saying women should be kept inside for there own good when men have a right to be equally safe anywhere. The principle of the home as a haven (from strangers) is there for men not women. The principle dates from long before domestic violence and rape within marriage were even considered crimes really.

I dont know if rape should be ranked but if it is i can understand the idea that you are supposed to be 'safe' at home.

I have had my handbag stolen twice. Once while i was walking out on the street, once (infamously on MN) from my home while i was there by an engineer.

The second time really shook me up because i felt like my home had been invaded. Somewhere that i was supposed top feel safe i didnt anymore....and that was just a handbag.
