Documentry going out at 9 on Thursday on 5live. The trailer's are making my heart sink already, she had her veiws changed apparently and wants to challenge ours The only thing in the papers at the weekend was her suggestion that the "industry" fund sex ed in schools.

Anyway, open mind and all that! sure as eggs is eggs there will be a phone and it would be nice if anyone could disprove my theory that everyone on a phone sounds like a political extremist.

Just read her article in the i today, she seems to highlight the 'good' side of it rather more than the downsides, obviously doesn't want to seem biased in anyway so she's trying to look 'balanced' in her views.
Very few politicians seem to want to take a stand on porn, they'd rather see the 'happy hooker' myth and bury their heads in the sand for the rest.

There's nothing men appreciate more than a pro-porn 'feminist', it's so reassuring...

JessinAvalon · 02/03/2011 13:52

So it goes on the list of disappointing programmes that could be really challenging. The recent BBC programme about the early sexualisation of children (let's cover a huge problem in half an hour) was very disappointing too - they had to scour the shops to find anything offensive apparently. Hmm...how is it I come across these things without wanting to see them or without proactively looking then?

If JS claims to be ok with the industry now I will lose a huge amount of respect for her.

Jesus! at the idea of 'the industry' funding sex education in schools. Reminds me of chocolate companies funding school fitness equipment, etc. I hate with a passion that kind of commercial involvement in schools, and it would be especially awful in this case. Why do we always give perpetrators the chance of suckering us with an illusion that they are coming up with the solutions?

Eleison · 02/03/2011 14:08

I just read JS's piece in the independent. It is quite thoughtful, but it does explicitly liken the idea of a porn involvement in school sex education to the Portman Group's self-regulatory promotion of responsible drinking, etc, which has always been a bit of a figleaf to enable them to keep on churning out high-volume alcohol sales in an increasinly deregulated environment at massive cost to health and city-centre life.

AlistairSim · 02/03/2011 14:11

I am sure I have read somewhere that JS is very intelligent.
Hmm

David51 · 02/03/2011 14:17

I didn't realise there was a problem with 'funding' sex education anyway.

I thought the problem was more about the unwillingness of schools to provide anything more than the bare minimum for fear of offending parents, the Daily Mail etc - and the fact that 'faith' schools, which now make up a third of the total, can opt out of teaching about issues such as homosexuality and contraception.

(And if it really was funded by the porn industry, just think what a propaganda weapon that would be for the anti-sex education lobby.)

JessinAvalon · 04/03/2011 08:44

I listened to this last night. Was a bit bemused at the suggestion of porn makers funding sex-ed in schools.

Thought she handled herself well though, especially when faced with a number of very personal questions about her husband's porn use.

Not sure what conclusions the programme came to. But even the owners if one of the biggest porn studios in the UK (sadly in my city of Bristol) agreed that it shouldn't be so easily available.

I laughed when I heard the voice of one of the most popular sex chat and porn stars in the country. She had a very strong Brizzle accent and it sounded soooo not sexy!

AyeRobot · 04/03/2011 09:33

I've not heard it yet, but have read some stuff around it and heard the trailers. I'm a bit bemused that someone who identifies as a feminist, was involved in student politcs and was HOME SECRETARY could be so naive about this whole subject and only became aware because of the furore stemming from a dodgy expenses claim.

It's not only the toffs that are blinkered, it seems.

JessinAvalon · 04/03/2011 13:13

I didn't get the impression from the programme that she was naive about the industry. But her involvement with the programme happened because of her personal situation.
