This has made me so cross. There was just a piece on PM on Radio 4 about this but can't find anything online. Apparently there are thousands of GPs who have accepted SPUC's leaflet as a way of informing women who are considering abortion about the facts. There was a GP on who was saying that they needed their leaflets because information elsewhere did not provide a true picture.

The SPUC is a lobbying group trying to prevent abortion altogether (let's remember they tried to get the Morning After pill banned a few years ago) and are completely bloody inappropriate as a source of information at a GP's surgery which are supposed to be impartial.

I'm quite tempted to write to the GMC Angry

Ladyofthemanor there no 'go for an abortion' leaflets.

There ARE however leaflets and websites which point out emotional effects and counselling options as well as procedures (what is involved) and costs where applicable.

Facts, not propaganda

I'd quite like to read one of the leaflets to see what it actually says.

why doesn't anyone write and distribute leaflets about how environental pollution from the factories entering our food and water supply causes cancer? OR pesticides?

LadyOfTheManor, what on earth do you mean by "rounding women up and plucking babies from their wombs"?! Do you think GPs have targets to meet for the number of women referred for abortion? The the Government has set out to increase the number of abortions? The only women referred for abortion are those who ask to be.

I have never seen anyone promote abortion as a good thing, more that most sensible people accept that whilst it is unpalatable, access to safe abortion is absolutely essential for the safety of women, and that that right should be enshrined in law.

LadyoftheMAnor, if you were really concerned about women having abortions then you'd be doing what feminists have been doing for years and fight for an increase in the status of motherhood through securing financial stability for mothers. This can be done in a number of ways: decent maternity leave provisions, or even by organizing pay-outs and subsidies for women who are prepared to undergo the risky event of childbirth, but ultimately you have to ensure that having a baby isn't a one way ticket to poverty.
Alternatively you could beging a mass education programme teaching men that sticking their dick into women is likely to cause pregnancy, and so unless they're sure that the woman they're with wants to be pregnant, they might try to refrain from putting her in this type of jeapordy.

Anyone who was really concerned about abortion (as opposed to controlling women) would be working on these things
