Me too! I am thinking it's either going to be amazing or some totally sexist bullshit.. I hope not the latter as I'll probably end up making some kind of brutal comment and showing-myself-up (as mother would say)

"Glass ceiling," I would imagine. No?

Teehee I know, hence the 'as mother would say' comment.

plupedantic, wouldn't they just call it glass ceiling if it was about the glass ceiling?

plupedantic · 23/02/2011 23:30

Well, if the word "feminist" can be discredited, so can phrases like "the glass ceiling", even if people want to use and discuss the concept.

The lingerie might also be a hint that they are talking about the kind of women who wear bras (as though that's a major no-no for a feminist! No way would I have ever burnt mine....).

TeiTetua · 24/02/2011 05:04

I can't help thinking of an attempt to cover up the nudity in the Sistene Chapel, gone all pervy.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 24/02/2011 05:08

All I can think of is something to do with women trying to overcome inequalities by 'playing to their strengths/the patriarchy' and going all empowerful with lingerie and trying to be cutthroat in the boardroom and also a sexbomb in the bedroom or something. And finding that that it only gets you so far.

Really, I don't know, I just want to be on this thread when you report back, Drizzela.

Drizzela · 24/02/2011 07:57

Ooh yes tortoise, that could be it. Makes sense.

Or yes, it could be discrediting 'glass ceiling' to make the concept more palatable for the Im-not-a-feminist-but crew.. will find out!

"cutthroat in the boardroom and also a sexbomb in the bedroom"

Sounds like that depressing aphorism of Jerry Hall, which is always quoted: cordon bleu chef in the kitchen, whore in the bedroom, etc. Extremely depressing. Who's going to be the chef/whore for a woman, eh?

Speaking of lapdancing, I was very depressed to see a sign at Piccadilly Circus the other day: "No VAT rise on lapdances". I didn't know whether to be slightly encouraged that demand must have fallen, for them to cut prices, or depressed, that the dancers would probably be swallowing the VAT rise.

SardineQueen · 24/02/2011 20:54

Lingerie ceiling? No idea.

Marking my place to find out later!

SardineQueen · 24/02/2011 20:54

If I google it I get this thread and a load of stuff about lighting Grin

Drizzela · 25/02/2011 10:33

ha ha I shall be disappointed if it's about lighting Grin

God, Dittany, I think youre on to something. How depressing.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 25/02/2011 11:23

if it is what Dittany says, then thank goodness it is being talked about. I find it incredible that businesses are legally allowed to entertain clients at lapdancing clubs - I mean, how is it not sex discrimination? Confused It also makes me mightily angry as a shareholder/customer; I would love to know which companies do this so I can avoid them.

Drizzela · 25/02/2011 12:52

Me too Seth's Mackerel. I know people who work for RSB do this if that's a good starting point for you? Most lapdance clubs show up on credit card bills as 'suchandsuch entertainment' so that it's not obvious to accounts staff what it's for.

OP posts:
Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 28/02/2011 03:48

Hmm, yes, Dittany's theory makes more sense than mine.

Depressing.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 18/03/2011 06:44

Drizzela, have you been to your conference now?

I am still dying to know about this term.
