BBC smoking article

Oh dear, I tried AIBU but think my post was badly worded! Hoping to find some like-minded souls here instead Smile

I have just complained about this article

Is anyone else slightly disturbed by the links the article makes between cigar smoking and female emancipation?

"Julieta says goodbye to Romeo" indeed!

"But is cigar-smoking destined to remain a man's world?"
"Are women ready for it?"
"Ms Heller says there is a significant number of women who enjoy the taste, aroma and cachet of premium cigars. "

Why is success forever being defined as the opportunity to ape undesirable male behaviours?

Granted, not all smokers or even cigar smokers are male, but why can't the BBC report this for what it is: a cynical and disturbing marketing ploy that will exploit and endanger women living in already difficult conditions?

Rant over.

Smoking has always been marketed to women as a "liberated", rebellious thing to do. It was the thing you did if you wanted to be modern, liberated, "career woman". Even as late as the eighties, I remember a brand called Kim which was specifically marketed at women, the tagline was "You've come a long way, Baby", with all the implications of liberation, progress towards equality etc, that that implies.

I found that article really interesting. Just shows how far we have to go if a woman smoking a certain type of tobacco product is seen as tabboo or peculiar.

I have smoked cigars Grin They are OK

I think the article makes the link, but I don't think it promotes the link. I thought the article was fairly interesting and even-handed to be honest and that you may have a bit of a bee in your bonnet about smoking!

Thanks for your comments, and I do agree the story itself is interesting.

Psychoveggie, depends when you read it - they replied positively to my comments and actually edited the piece.

I guess I do have a bee in my bonnet about smoking though. Actually I think I've been feeling pissed off at things in general recently - I have never complained before! Will use my energy on something 'bigger' next time.
