Lapdancing clubs in Leicester

So what is the optimum number of lapdancing clubs in a city? Leicester has five but is set to impose a limit of three

www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/news/Bid-force-sex-clubs-close-heavy-handed/article-3216221-detail/article.html

Most people consulted said they wanted none at all and many of us would agree with that. But how do you respond to the argument that a zero limit would drive the clubs 'underground' and make them harder to regulate?

I'd say none also.

As for the clubs being driven underground, I'd hazard a guess that there are many already there. If that's the argument for keeping them, I'd suggest that there should also be an optimum number of brothels and dog fighting arena in order to enable regulation (accepting, of course, that this is also a stupid argument as neither are legal, I think).

TheProvincialLady · 14/02/2011 14:22

I'd say that was any easy answer for any law that the council/police/whoever didn't think was important enough for them to bother to enforce. Even if these clubs were driven underground and unregulated, the number of men who went to them would be significantly smaller and I don't believe for one minute that the working conditions of the women would be much worse than they currently are. I suppose there might be less checking that the women weren't also offering sexual services beyond the dancing...although that already happens in so called regulated clubs. What the council is really worried about is losing income.

Sarsaparilllla · 14/02/2011 14:35

I think pusing them underground would mean much worse workimg conditions for the women involved with no regulations for them and would cause more problems then having them regulated

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 14/02/2011 14:45

I would use the analogy of prostitution: where it is legal you tend to get more of the illegal stuff happening as well, rather than less.

I have always found the 'it will go underground' argument incredibly weak; we are always being told that the men who go to these clubs are perfectly normal respectable people. So if that is the case, they won't be happy to frequent illegal clubs, will they? Confused

JeaninePattibone · 14/02/2011 16:49

I don't really the idea that it will drive the clubs underground, but I do think it is worth considering where the women will go.

I suspect many will travel to clubs in other towns, where competition for work will be higher. Some will move into other types of sex work. Others will simply lose what is likely to be a much better income than the could hope to earn elsewhere.

One think I'm fairly sure of is that none of them will thank you for it.

JeaninePattibone · 14/02/2011 16:52

One thing. Bloody predictive text!

JessinAvalon · 14/02/2011 18:15

None.

It's 2011.

And we have a half naked woman on page 3 of one of our "newspapers" everyday and clubs where you can pay a girl to grind naked on your lap on the high street whenever you feel like it.

Progress indeed.

JessinAvalon · 14/02/2011 18:16

I am impressed that Leicester are taking this stand. First council I know to decide to actually reduce numbers.

AliceWorld · 14/02/2011 18:20

Do you know where Hackney is Jess (vis a vis their limit, not geographically)? I was trying to find out t'other day.

JessinAvalon · 14/02/2011 18:37

According to a recent post on the yahoo group, their decision will be made tomorrow. We await with bated breath!

JeaninePattibone · 14/02/2011 18:54

If there are more applications than the cap (>0) allows, how do they decide which ones to approve?

This may sound academic, but I think it could be very important and may be the cause of any legal challenges. Licensing decisions are normally one applicant one licence, but by placing an arbitrary limit on the number of licences, you introduce an element of competition. By setting a limit below demand, the council is also creating a valuable commodity.

New to Feminism board so go easy Grin

Surely if they go 'underground' then that means they're illegal, which means when you find them it's easier to shut down/prosecute? So a good thing in the long run?

Also, it will stop the casual user?

I'm Leicester btw. A new Spearmint Rhino opened up recently. The Leicester Mercury featured a half page spread advert and free entry coupon! Hmm

And yes you're right on those points. So easy isn't it, yet people go to such great lengths to make it not so.
