Reusable Sanitary Towels??

salamander25 · 07/02/2011 18:49

Hello all,

I am doing a project at university on reusable sanitary towels, trying to work out what's good and bad about them and how people use them.

I've made a survey to find out a bit more;

www.surveymonkey.com/s/reusabletowels

Would really appreciate it if you could help me out :)

Or if anyone has any comments about good brands they buy, or problems they've had in the past would love to start a discussion about it here.

Thanks x

What are they made out of to sew? I do like the pretty ones Grin

Imps7 · 08/02/2011 19:08

Ditto AliceWorld 's query - I have only ever used disposable pads and tampons and had no idea there were other options, aside from the Mooncup. Not sure about the Mooncup but given the raving reviews here I think I will push my misconceptions aside and give it a go...

AliceWorld · 08/02/2011 19:11

Do Imps, Mooncups are great Grin. Well lunettes are greater for me, but they are generally great.

Have you read, "The Sanitary Protection Scandal?" I think it was published by WEN. It might be a bit out of date now but very interesting reading.

muddyangels123 · 08/02/2011 19:21

The lady on Ebay makes them to your own requirements.
I won't name her as i know that will be advertising.
Pantyliners, thin, thick towels. Flannel, fleece, cotton etc.. You can have PUL (waterproof) or not. whatever suits you.Grin.
I would defo. go for wings as the pantyliners without wings tend to move around iykwim.
I wish i could make them myself.Blush
( I tried but they never ended up flat.Blush.

I just bought some from www.moonrabits.co.uk, it was £22.75 for an 8 pad starter pack.

I did initially think it was a bit gross but now I can't wait to use them :o

BranchingOut · 09/02/2011 12:29

I feel even more determined to give it a go.

I have a stock of disposable towels etc that I am working through, but after that it is going to be menstrual cup or washable all the way!

It is surely not even going to be a full load each month, so the washing cost must be pretty negligible.

mercibucket · 09/02/2011 20:41

mine were weenotions I think and are great. I soak then stick them in a normal wash with all the other clothes. i also recycle the water onto the garden Grin which I remember reading about once and thinking was utterly grim. now it seems wasteful to chuck all that great fertiliser down the loo - ahh what an eco queen rofl

chipmonkey · 09/02/2011 22:36

Took the survey but not sure how well it reflected my actual use.

I have one very heavy day in my cycle and prefer to use something to back the mooncup up. At the end of my cycle I use cloth pads on their own.

The pads are so pretty!

mamadiva · 10/02/2011 08:01

Merci - sorry to quiz you about this but I have just gotten some reusables and was planning on just rinsing them through when I am done with them and chucking them in the next wash at 40 degrees with clothes etc.

Have you found this affected any of your other stuff at all? I had mentioned it to someone else but everyone seemed to be of the opinion that would be minging :o

Takver · 10/02/2011 09:11

I do exactly that, mamadiva (well used to pre mooncup) and I never found it caused any problem at all. Just give them a good rinse in cold water & have a lidded bucket to keep them in til your next wash - generally about 1/2 a day in this household Grin.

AliceWorld · 10/02/2011 12:00

Mamadiva - I've not used them yet but there is a general perception that menstrual blood is disgusting anyway, as you see when people discuss mooncups, so I can imagine people would have that view. I can't imagine people do a separate wash if they had a nosebleed.

Reminds me of something wot I read, that said you're not emancipated till you are willing to taste your own menstrual blood. I found that very interesting as I would have no qualms about putting a bleeding finger in my mouth. Goes deep that menstrual blood = disgusting thing.

Weenotions look nice but are called fairy hammocks...

mercibucket · 10/02/2011 16:17

once you've soaked them there's not much blood in them in any case - it's all in the water instead. I wash them at 30 just to be extra minging Grin.

SardineQueen · 10/02/2011 19:22

muddyangels I don't see why you shouldn't say who makes your pads, there have been plenty of brands recommended on here Smile

OP have done the survey as a mooncup user Smile

salamander25 · 11/02/2011 14:29

Thanks everyone for all your comments and for completing the survey, really do appreciate it :)
