Feminist issues on tv thread

Just thought I'd start this thread. I haven't got anything to add to it yet, but thought that it might be a good place for people to post 'heads up's for any tv programmes coming up that are either going to be dire or really good wrt feminism and worth discussing.

I was prompted to post it after looking over iplayer last night to find something to watch and put 'feminism' into the search to, unsurprisingly find nothing. I remember there was a series about women's libbers a while back but I guess there may be something more when it gets close to IWD.

And of course any discussion about progs that could do with complaining about etc.

I caught the last minute of a programme on BBC 1 this morning. I can't remember what it's called but Nicky Campbell presents it. They were discussing, I think, whether feminism breeds violent women. I will look later to see if it's on iplayer.

I will also be watching the new Hawaiii 5-0 tonight.

FlamingoBingo · 06/02/2011 19:07

Was it the same prog where last week they discussed Grey and Keys?

What's special about the new Hawaii 5-0?

I think so. I can't remember what it's called but it involves an audience and some guests discussing big issues. Will be interesting to watch as I would like to know how people think feminism breeds violence.

Nothing particularly important about Hawaii 5-0 for me that's just what I will be watching this evening. Not sure why I put so many i's in it before!

LilBB, is it 'The Big Questions'?

LilBB · 06/02/2011 19:43

Yes!! That's it.

FlamingoBingo · 06/02/2011 19:49

I never saw the original - I expect I won't really be much good at comparing in that case! Maybe if they did a new baywatch? Grin

I didnt watch the original either but from the ads it looks like the usual American drivel that I enjoy. Apparently they are remaking Dallas!! I don't know how that would work without the 80s power dressing.

The 'Big Questions' never seems to ask the right question.

My favourite was "Do cats go to heaven?"
Hmm

FlamingoBingo · 07/02/2011 18:23

Oh hahahahahahahahaha at that question, David51!!!! What a profound and important question!

I think it ought to be 'should you hang trousers from the waistband or the hems when drying on a line?'. Waddya reckon?

OP posts:
LilBB · 07/02/2011 19:13

I didn't get to watch Hawaii 5-0 as dd decided not to go to bed.

Those are both important questions. The answers are yes and waistband

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 07/02/2011 23:13

Do cats go to heaven? is about on a par with Has feminism bred violent women? tbh.

Other pressing issues of the day include:

When oh when will David Dimbleby retire?
Are goats evil?
Is Lady Gaga a harbinger of the day of judgement?
Is the jaffa cake a biscuit or a cake?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 07/02/2011 23:15

It's here about 43 mins in btw, haven't watched it yet.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 07/02/2011 23:18

Ok, god, I've started watching it. Is that Christopher FUCKING Hitchens over there on the left, telling off a woman for laughing at the idea that the pill was only a revolution for men. "Whatever it was, there's nothing funny about it"

God that man's odious.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 07/02/2011 23:21

Oh marvellous it's Peter Hitchens.

Warning this will make you laugh/cross.

"Generations of poets have written about how upsetting it is to see women drunk".

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 07/02/2011 23:24

Sorry I kno I'm posting a million times about this, but what's making me laugh is that they're saying basically:

Women are acting like men!

But they shouldn't be doing it!

Because they aren't like men! We know that! Men and women are like tooootally different.

No-one's saying but, whoops, they're acting like men, therefore they can act "like men", therefore they're not actually that different at all.

Again, it's the attempt to enforce difference by restricting women's behaviour.

Does anyone ever say, men shouldn't become hairdressers because it's taking women's jobs, and if men become good at cutting hair (and thereby behave like women) the world will be ending shortly? No, it's only said when it's the issue of women getting out of line that's at stake.

Women, know your place.

Nude female on TV cooking show.

A Hong Kong adult TV channel will soon air a cooking show with a nude female presenter who will prepare food while wearing a transparent apron, apparently to encourage more men to cook.
