How do you pronounce Ms?

I've always rhymed it with fizz but some people do that sort of nothingy vowel sound in the middle so that's it's more like Mzz.

I say Mzz, but I don't know which is correct. I just presumed Mzz.

FlorenceAndTheMachine · 11/01/2011 11:07

I think I pronounce it somewhere between Mzz and Mizz. But not sure how to write that Grin

I am now sitting here going Mizz, Mizz, Mzzz, Mzzz ...

ClaireDeLoon · 11/01/2011 11:09

Mzz

Lio · 11/01/2011 11:14

Oh no, if Mzz wins then I stand to lose face with dh, who says Mzz!

It is supposed to be Mizz - it is an abbreviation of Mistress, just like Mrs and Miss are.
But in practice so many people don't understand if you say that, so I tend to say Mizz if I am talking to people who might understand and Mzz the rest of the time!

wiki on history of the term

Lio · 11/01/2011 11:33

Oh good, I can still say Mizz with pride then.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/01/2011 13:42

I tend to say Mzz, in order to distinguish between that and Miss with people who are about to jump to the conclusion that I am much-divorced and/or a bit of a black widow.

Kind of sounds like the second half of the word "mummers". Which is obviously a word I use all the time...

Bue · 11/01/2011 14:27

It's definitely Mizz for me - I can't stand he sound Mzz for some reason!

RhinestoneCowgirl · 11/01/2011 14:30

Mzz, but sounds clumsy (and I am one)

My idea would be to abolish the whole Mr/Mrs/Ms etc and just have firstname secondname - unless you have a special title such as Dr, Rev etc...

ILovedYou · 11/01/2011 15:36

I hate Mizz/Mzz, i find it offensive!!
Don't ask me...

minipie · 11/01/2011 15:52

I say Mzz. (Actually more like Muzz, with an "ugh" type sound in the middle)

Agree with Rhinestone about abolishing male/female titles.

....plus we would sound all Shakespearean, which would be fun.

yea, verily!

Lio · 12/01/2011 20:42

Yes, my favourite would be to get rid of male/female titles too.

I love it that we've all been very good and, at her request, not asked why ILovedYou hates Ms Grin

Oooh, oooh, ooh!

Can I point you ladies who're on my facebook in the direction of the note I've just written about using Ms? I'd like to know if I've got it all right or if you think there's anything else I should add.

Btw, I say it 'Mizz', but then in my accent 'Mizz' and 'Miss' sound quite different.

Lio · 14/01/2011 17:00

Very pleased for your excitement, LRD Wink

Adair · 14/01/2011 17:05

I say a sort of 'mzz/'muzz'...

But I worked in a school where all the female teachers were called 'Miss' but written Ms. I liked it. (Better than the weird PRU I taught at where we were called Miss Firstname/Mr Firstname like some sort of weird colonial throwback...)

JaneS · 16/01/2011 13:46

Grin at Lio.
