In today's Guardian
The paper also contained a two page report on the murders of three women by Steven Griffiths, which made me think back over 10 years to when I was a homeless teenager. The level of everyday abuse female women living on the street are subjected to is beyond anything most people would believe. I was spat at, kicked, assumed to be a sex worker and abused/pestered for it almost daily (often by the same man at the same time
), flashed, groped...
Now of course I realise none of that is equal to murder. But reading how 134 sex workers are believed to have been murdered since 1990, and then this piece about street harassment, just makes me feel very depressed. It is as if the streets belong to men - women may use them at their own peril, and may god help you if you are forced to live or work on them.
Merseyside police now treat crime against sex workers as hate crime which is a step towards addressing it - but why is all sexual harassment not treated as such? Why should women be expected to accept abuse and harassment as they go about their daily business, whatever that may be?
Apologies if that went off on too much of a tangent...
