good news?

After initial pleasure the cynic in me suspects the glass cliff at play here.

The recession being a perfect opportunity for women to be employed into leadership positions that are associated with a greater risk of failure and criticism - hence false inflation of the figures.

I suspect it is to do with the decline in the economy and many higher earning men have probably been laid off.

My guess is that it is a combination of good progress for all the right reasons, and the fact that in a recession there are fewer of the silly salaries which raise the mean men's salary without having much to do with what most people are earning.

I think higher executive wages have been going up disproportionately.

The Glass Cliff theory does predict this sort of thing.

glass cliff

In recessions and precarious times, women get more of the 'good' jobs, because, as the theory goes, they can be shat on when it all goes wrong ( which it will)

It's good news but I wouldn't get too excited. Gender pay gap stats are based on a snapshot of pay data from April. So this was pre-election.
Since then a new government has come in and announced 500,000 job losses in the public sector. Women make up 2/3 of public sector workforce. Public sector pays women better than private sector. Gender pay gap in private sector is twice as big as gender pay gap in public sector.
All in all, public sector cut backs will undo any progress that's been made on gender pay gap.
Sorry to be the voice of doom but that's my gloomy prediction.
Oh, and we're still shit compared to other EU countries!

Surely this just reflects the ongoing commitment of women to having a really good go at whatever job it is they are playing at doing.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more comment on this. Is it not a good thing then? I read that women in their twenties are now out earning men.

so now I just want to make sure either of my children don't sacrifice their careers and share childcare etc equally when they are older and they then won't fall behind financially.
