Hey all!
Hope everyone got home ok. My journey back was fine - no problems and bus driver was early and let me onto the bus to wait in the warm so I wasn't standing about in the cold.

ReclaimthenightLeeds, a big thank you to you and the other organisers. The organisation was fantastic - I was so impressed by the way it was run. I loved having the drumming, the stickers, the leaflets with chants, the placards, the cups of tea in the hall afterwards - brilliant.

Lovely to see you 3LittlePebbles & MrsClown. Keep us posted with your local group setting up.

Really glad I went Smile Smile Smile Smile

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/12/2010 11:46

We made a lot of noise didn't we? Grin

It was brilliant to see how long it took for the whole march to go past; I have no idea what the numbers were in absolute terms but it certainly made feminism visible.

ReclaimthenightLeeds - I would like to know more about the campaign against rape in the Congo and how we can take this forward. I have been googling a bit this morning but most of the articles present it as something happening in darkest Africa that we can't do anything about. The speaker last night made it quite clear we should be lobbying the British government; which organisation is co-ordinating it?

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/12/2010 12:07

sorry, I've managed to find a useful link now after googling a bit more intelligently:

Jane Gregory on UK Feminista

ReclaimtheNightLeeds · 05/12/2010 12:28

Thanks for finding that link. Were you at Feminism in London? Marie Clare was another of the Congo delegation and gave an inspiring speech.

The drummers were fantastic weren't they! They were from honeydrum Glad you enjoyed it and all the organizational stuff. My shoulders ache from carrying all those placards through town yesterday afternoon!

I wasn't there but I heard the speech on the live feed.
am thinking about what our local group can do on the issue, as well as writing to MP individually of course.

ReclaimtheNightLeeds · 05/12/2010 12:35

Re the numbers, we always wait for the press to tell us Grin

Calendar were there last night and we should be on at 6.30 tonight. Last year was between 200-300 (BBC said 300), and I would say it was comparable (which is great considering the snow!)

You could always get Jane and Kongosi to speak at your group (and also when you organise a Reclaim the Night Grin - if you do ever want to do that, seriously, we can tell you how we do it)

OP posts:
sethstarkaddersmum · 05/12/2010 19:16

bah, missed Calendar today - did you see it? Were we on?

We were taking mental notes about how it all worked with a view to doing one ourselves one day but we need our group to get established first Smile. One thing that became clear was quite how much work had gone into it!

ReclaimtheNightLeeds · 05/12/2010 19:44

We were, but they did a whole thing about a student protest in York, so we were kind of more minor protest, further down the billing.

Yeh we were working on it since May, and that's second time of doing it so we had a lot of stuff already in place. But that's lots of us with day jobs, kids, studies etc. too, so we weren't working on it solidly since May.

If you ever do fancy it though, the offer's there Smile

just found you a link to the programme. 4.28 in

OP posts:
ReclaimtheNightLeeds · 05/12/2010 19:45

Oh and they said over 200 people

DuchessOfAvon · 05/12/2010 19:51

Oh pants - I can't believe I have been so disorganised and missed it. SOrry, sorry.

Will be there next year - promise.

thanks.
I had no idea it would be on tv, that's great! It doesn't matter that the piece was short.

We have such a lot to learn about how to do activism; will definitely be coming back to pick people's brains Grin

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/12/2010 19:59

I will join the group too I think, just to make absolutely sure I don't miss any of it....

ReclaimtheNightLeeds · 05/12/2010 20:00

Yes just search reclaim the night leeds, we're on facebook. And twitter. We don't remind you that often, honest. Wink

Last year we were on BBC too, and also on a report mid year about rape conviction rates on the BBC too.

Wow thanks for that Guardian article - hadn't see that. Very comprehensive.

I heard the "get a job" comments, it happened more than one Hmm.

OP posts:
sethstarkaddersmum · 06/12/2010 18:04

yes 'get a job' is a very strange comment, I mean it was Saturday night ffs, not 11am on a Monday morning Confused

I had no idea what the various men who yelled at us were saying - which was one of the nice things about it - we didn't care what they were saying because we didn't need to care.

MrsClown · 08/12/2010 16:34

Same here threelittlepebbles. We must arrange a Yorkshire get together next year in spring maybe.
