Offensive clothing

I follow this woman online sometimes and her latest post is very interesting to me. In a nutshell, a clothing company is selling t-shirts for boys/men with very disturbing statements on them. Eg "I recylce women". Her objections are at least partly religious which I don't subscribe to, but I do think its worrying that this kind of thing still happens.

I'm not a prude and I don't mind a cheeky t-shirt or two but is this just going over the line? Where is the line? What about t-shirts for little boys saying, "Lock up your daughters"?

I'm interested in all other thoughts.

Totally agree...i hate seeing little girls in 'sexy' clothes with suggestive slogans.Every one complains (quite rightly)about sex offenders but some go on to sexualise their daughters by dressing them up like teenagers/women...i hate seeing little girls wearing make up,surely they have all their adult life for that......depressing isn't it.....

Pogleswood · 30/09/2010 10:21

I had this discussion with a friend the other day after we'd seen a teenager wearing a T shirt that said "I've had your mother".

I think it is offensive - not sure where freedom to wear what you want and express yourself fits here, but it all adds up to a climate where the attitudes on the t shirt are normalised, and if you don't think its just a bit of a laugh you're just uptight/prudish.(Yep - that's me!)

(To be a bit more flippant about the slogan we saw we did think that if you are going to have that sort of slogan on your chest you need to be able to back it up - it really doesn't work if the rest of you looks like Mr Bean...)

sfxmum · 30/09/2010 10:26

it just makes them look like idiots IMO

MoralDefective · 30/09/2010 10:27

I would have thought most men would also hate the 'i've had your mother' slogan...are they all just so thick....I'd cut these T shirts up if either DSs brought them home....there was a thread on here ages ago about offensive T shirts and i can't find it now but some were awfulSad

sunny2010 · 30/09/2010 10:36

Its no different to boys are stupid throw rocks at them and all those types of shirts. I think if adults want to wear slogan shirts away from kids thats ok so maybe at night time venues etc then thats up to them but not in the day when kids might read them.

I dont like some slogans on kids shirts or baby wear but a lot must do as there seems to be a market for some reason.

Pogleswood · 30/09/2010 10:44

Yes,I'd have just as much of a problem with that, sunny (Boys are stupid...)

So is offensive stuff only a problem when children can see it??
And I realise not everyone finds it offensive - but I reckon quite a lot of people do.

sunny2010 · 30/09/2010 10:47

pogleswood - No I mean you cant really stop people really from wearing what they want but they should have the discretion to not wear it around children.

LostArt · 30/09/2010 10:52

I don't find those sort of t-shirts offensive. I just pity the people wearing them - they might as well wear a sandwich board saying 'I'm stupid'. I can't bring myself to hate anything/anyone that stupid.

A man wearing such a shirt doesn't alter my life in anyway, so why shouldn't they wear it if they want? No one has the right not to be offended.

pinkthechaffinch · 30/09/2010 11:04

Some people are just very repulsivestrange though.

We were recently out walking at a local beauty spot when a man in his 40s, with young kids and partner in tow, approached.

After they walked past, I was Shock as blasoned across his t shirt was I Heart
Bukaki

DH didn't know what it was so I told him and he was also suitably Hmm when I told him it's a term for a large group of men simultaneously wanking over one woman.

LostArt · 30/09/2010 11:11

I'm glad I didn't have to google that pink!

I know these people are idiots and they want to cause offense. At least their clothing is giving us a loud clear message to avoid them.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/09/2010 11:14

That is so weird/creepy pink, WTF was he thinking? You have to wonder what his partner thinks of it? (Maybe he's told her it's some mysterious martial art)

Funnily enough you never see women (let along mums with small kids) going round with slogans like "Shag anything with a pulse" or "Cunnilingus is for life, not just for Christmas".

scarylooker · 30/09/2010 11:18

There was a man used to attend our local gym in t-shirts that said things like "money can't buy love but it sure buys a lot of pussy." Not just every now and again, I'm talking every single time I saw him.

I just assumed he was a prat, but I gather from a friend that someone had a word and told him he wasn't welcome at a gym wearing that sort of thing.

EricNorthmansmistress · 30/09/2010 11:19

I saw a teenage boy wearing 'I swear she was awake' on a t shirt. Mind boggling. Who thinks these are a good idea, and who lets their children wear them? Confused

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/09/2010 11:25

ENM - and they say there's no rape culture eh? :(

Pogleswood · 30/09/2010 11:29

Pro rape T shirts - how nice...But he probably doesn't see it like that.

But if you can by a t shirt that says it,then it must be an ok thought to have, and like misogynist or misandrist adverts it puts the idea out in the public domain, and it does affect how people think.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/09/2010 11:47

Well you've got films like Observe and Report in general release - they're made for these people (idiotic teenage boys and the idiotic teenage men that some of them turn into).

I saw a man wearing a t-shirt that read "How long does it take a woman to come? I don't care" or something. Am still puzzling over whether you would want to advertise that you were that bad in bed. My charitable interpretation was that he was gay.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/09/2010 11:48

whether I mean why you would want to.

MrSeptember · 30/09/2010 11:55

Ericnorthmanmistress - that is mindboggling. And frankly, I do find it offensive.

Someone earlier in the thread said that people can wear what they like.

But I question whether a reputable store would print and sell t-shirts that say things like, "I'm with the KKK" or "Lesbian's aren't real women" so I'm not sure why it's okay to have t-shirts that say things like, "I swear she was awake" or the one Elephants mentioned.

Or for that matter, the ones that are referenced in the post I originally linked to.

OP posts:
MrSeptember · 30/09/2010 11:56

Eric - not that I don't think you find it offensive. It occurs to me that may not have been clear.

OP posts:
arfasleep · 30/09/2010 12:08

They are really horrid but at least the men wearing them can easily be spotted as arseholes not suitable to any potential girlfriends Wink

larrygrylls · 30/09/2010 13:03

MrSeptember,

I think you have a fair point. I do think that t shirt is misogynistic and dangerously close to being pro-rape.

I am not sure whether it should be illegal as we do have free speech, but reputable stockists should not be selling it.

MoralDefective · 30/09/2010 14:31

Reputable stockists probably don't sell them but just google offensive T shirts and see what comes up........it's not Marks and SparksShock

msrisotto · 30/09/2010 20:05

It's fucking awful. I don't see this kind of thing, or at least, I don't notice it. It is SO wrong though. It is so threatening.
