Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Women who falsely accuse, of RAPE etc. Feminists ?

Oblomov · 02/09/2010 09:48

FACT
There have been lots of discussions on here of RAPE recently.
But what about all these woman who falsley accused. what damage they do. then it is even harder for women who have really been raped to be believed.

Do feminists believe that women do falsely accuse.
That poor head of Dept, was accused by a troubled girl and has now lost his chance of being a Headmaster.
What about that girl, who i remember from the papaers, scuffed her own arms when a boy she knew refused to give her the taxi money. she accused him of rape.

At uni, I knew someone who we all thought was falsely accused of rape. He never recovered. his perssonality changed forever.

I am not a rape supporter. I don't support men who rape. But neither do I hate men and automatically assume that all men are cappable of rape. Men are falsely accused sometimes you know. not every woman tells the truth.

I think there is a general suspicion of rape victims that they deserved or invited the crime or that no crime took place, people who falsely accuse men of rape add weight to this.

Mystifying OP. Is there a point to discuss here? Or are you just coming to tell people off for being naive and credulous, in your view?

mummylin2495 · 02/09/2010 12:22

there is a woman who dosent live too far from me who has recently been sent to prison for falsely accusing someone of rape. The reason she gave was that she didnt want her boyfriend to find out she had been with another man. What a nightmare for anyone male or female this must be.

mummylin2495 · 02/09/2010 12:28

story here

Oblomov · 02/09/2010 12:29

"naive and credulous" ?

I feel very sorry for someone who has been raped.
I also feel very sorry for men who are maliciously accused. which seems to be the case for many of the reports. like the taxi one i mentioned.

why is it a crime to feel sorry for someone, whose life is dramatically altered by a malicious aqusation ?

feeling sorry for somoen who has been falsely acused, has nothing to do with someoen who actually has been raped. i feel sympathy and empathy for them .
can't the two possible sit together ?

"why is it a crime to feel sorry for someone, whose life is dramatically altered by a malicious aqusation ?"

It isn't. No one said it was. I really don't understand the point you're arguing here - as far as I can tell, everyone has agreed that false accusations do happen for most crimes, and that it's a bad thing for someone to be unfairly accused of a crime. I'm not aware of any feminist (or anyone else) ever saying otherwise.

Who are you arguing with?

I think everybody is being a little unfair to OP. lots of leaping down throats and accusations and not much sensible discussion. If you don't want to talk about the small minority of cases where the defendant is falsey accused then don't. The existence of false accusations does not imply that it is not hard to get convictions when rape actually did take place AND one can care about false accusations even if you know that the real problem is in the number of cases being brought to trail and in the conviction rate

Oblomov · 02/09/2010 12:36

Eric, if you lied and falsely acused somone of rape/murder/paedophilia/abuse/neglect/ etc etc, then yes that would have a dramtic effect on their life. they may lose their job. and the horror of something that they have been accused of wrongly might have an awful affect on their life.

sally clarke was accused of killing her 2 children. cotdeath ? 1: 73 million said meadows. dramatic affect on her life. seeing as the poor woman is no longer with us.

yes. dramtic effect of false acusation.

i'm not saying that they are any more prevulent than any other crime, AND I NEVER SAID that there were lots of false acqusations of rape. but those that are, are dramatic. i beleive.

So will you be starting threads about false accusations of other crimes, then?

Well false accusations do happen and it's terrible for the defendant. You could grant sexual offences' defendants anonymity but I don't see why they should be a special case.

And as others have said, false accusations happen for other crimes too.

And it is also terrible for a woman to go through the process and see her attacker acquitted.

And it is terrible that women are more likely than men to receive a custodial sentence for offences like benefit fraud.

All in all, it is an unpleasant business, all round, for everyone concerned.

You can't really make it nicer for everyone although you could make it fairer.

I don't see what more there is to say.

sethstarkaddersmum · 02/09/2010 12:53

you know what, today I am mostly getting worked up not about the women who are simply raped and don't get a conviction, or about the men who are falsely accused, but about the women who get raped and then get falsely accused of having made a false allegation because they've been seen talking to their attacker afterwards or similar.
Not that it's a competition or anything, but I think they're probably the ones who suffer the most Sad

it's very sad to think like this but frankly because there is so much attention paid to false allegations, and so much risk of not getting a fair trial, if someone I was close to was raped I would be likely to advise them not to report it in case they end up being the one to get their reputation ruined on top of everything else.

Janos · 02/09/2010 12:56

I didn't put words in your mouth Oblomov. I was trying to work out what you meant. That's why I asked the question!

edam · 02/09/2010 13:03

I think it's very sad that we live in a society which hates women so much most people believe many rape victims are liars. A society where lots of people sympathise with men accused of rape, rather than women who have suffered rape. A society where many women buy into this misogynistic crap, partly because it's safer to be on the winning side, partly because of the belief that if you are a 'good' girl, bad things won't happen to you.
