What is going on with this t-shirt?

here

DH was looking at the pro-science t-shirts and was a bit Shock to find this one.

His question is what exactly they mean by 'bitches'?
Is it just a negative way of referring to people of either gender or are they referring to the fact that women are more likely than men to be anti-science?

(I think we're probably going to point out to the people who came up with it that it is vile but it would be good to do so from a position of knowing what they think they are saying.)

I do not understand what they mean either.

I am not sure whether it is referring to gender in this case. There are times when 'bitch' is used in a gender neutral fashion. Looking at their other stuff it seems that it is a general theme to say 'science works' then 'something against creationists' comment.

Sammyuni · 01/09/2010 19:20

'bitches'**

Ephiny · 01/09/2010 19:29

I don't think it's referring to women directly, or even remembering we exist - I think it's about scientist/sceptic men putting other men in their place, the way the term is used in a derogatory way between men, e.g. 'you're my bitch'. I'm not explaining this very well, but I think that's sort of what it is.

Do not like.

sunfunandmum · 01/09/2010 19:32

If I saw anyone wearing this I would assume it referred anyone of both sexes who didn't like science or scientists.

Anyway, it's horrible just because it's so aggressive and arrogant.

Ephiny · 01/09/2010 19:34

See, I kind of agree with the sentiment, it just would have been nice if they could have made the point without bringing an anti-woman insult into it.

sethstarkaddersmum · 01/09/2010 19:37

thanks all.
Yes, 'bitches' is still unpleasant (and misogynist) even if it means people of both sexes - because it's using a specifically female term in order to disparage men by implying they have female characteristics.

don't worry, he wasn't planning to buy it. Honest!

Tis just one of those horrendous slogan jobbies designed to give dullards instant cool and street cred. And be a little bit out there and funny and ironic. Except it doesn't and it's really shit

ISNT · 01/09/2010 20:02

I thought it meant that science works, unlike bitches, who don't do any work.

Whether these non-working bitches might be men or women is ?

It's bizarre.

ISNT · 01/09/2010 20:04

The keywords on this tshirt, presumably for google, are

Science works bitches. Geek Nerd Nerdy Geeky Science Teacher Woman Trendy Best Selling Design

Yes I think this tshirt is a top choice for a female teacher Grin

It would be a very useful t-shirt if you were a woman scientist working in an all-male sad loser misogynist research group and you wanted to fit in.

I think you need to be someone who hears this type of language in everyday life to understand it. You'd probably be an african American. The use of bitch in this case is colloquial.

Prepares to be flamed by folks claiming I'm saying African Americans are all sexist. Grin

Ephiny, gets it...ISNT is way off.
