I have seen on here a few times about how some of you manage to enjoy your periods Shock

I hate every minute of mine. I end up getting really upset about it because it's so heavy and painful.

I really wish I could be more positive about mine, and hopefully that will rub off on dd.

Please can you give me tips on how not to hate my periods.

TIA

have you tried a mooncup? Some people find it makes them lighter (I did, but mine weren't particularly heavy to start with.)

If they're painful it's not surprising you hate them though! It doesn't mean you have any kind of issue, just that you not unreasonably don't like pain!

thefinerthingsinlife · 25/08/2010 10:25

I love my mooncup, and it has helped me hate them less because I feel cleaner IYSWIM.

ooh mooncups, somehow I imagine they would make the pain worse - not so?

I can't say I love mine, I get really bad cramps, sometimes throw up, and have to have a constant supply of one particular painkiller (and water to take it with) with me during the whole thing. But I do like the fact that I have a menstrual cycle, it's the same thing that will hopefully allow me to have kids after all. Plus it's a sign that my body is in goodish health.

thefinerthingsinlife · 25/08/2010 10:54

Nooo mooncups are fab. You can't even feel it when it's in, and obviously you don't need to wear a pad, so it takes that yukky damp feeling away.

I guess thats a good way of thinking about it, it's my body showing me i'm healthy.

Have you seen your GP to see if there's anything that would help? I used to have horrifically painful periods (the kind that make you vom) and I don't really think there's any way of enjoying that. I'm on the pill and use a mooncup which has made them about 1000% better. No pain, no vomiting, no horrible tampons/pads to get rid of.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 25/08/2010 11:05

why does the mooncup make it so much better (aside from the not having to buy pads/tampons and dispose of them)? I mean why does it feel better?

treacle - what pill if you don't mind me asking? (nice to see you over here!)

LimaCharlie · 25/08/2010 11:09

I've heard it said that tampons drain the moisture out of you as they absorb which makes it more painful than the mooncup which just sits there collecting.

From a convenience pov - no damp string hanging down, no worries about TSS, no having to carry tampons / towels to the toilet and then wrap them copiously in loo roll to dispose of (or as on the house guest thread have to carry them to the outside bin)

thefinerthingsinlife · 25/08/2010 11:14

I've seen the GP and he has put me on a pill that I take for 3 months at a time, i'm 2 months in and i've bled everyday so far, not a lot but enough to be a pita.
I'm due to go back and see him so I will try something else.

Elephant, the main reason I like my mooncup so much, is I hate that unclean feeling you get with pads, and tampons make me sore.

The thing I hated most about my period was disposing of bloody tampons and towels, so unpleasant, now I have a mooncup and it is so much cleaner, I just don't have to worry about it at all, wouldn't say I enjoyed my periods, but they don't make my life a misery anymore.

I also find eating properly, and little and often helps with PMT.

RamblingRosa · 25/08/2010 11:21

So how does the mooncup work then? Do you have to wash it out several times a day? Or do you leave it in all day? I would be worried that it might dislodge or I'd put it in wrong and leak everywhere (I have quite heavy periods and there are a couple of days when it's "flooding" so I wouldn't want to risk something that might not stay put IYSWIM).

HomeEcoGnomist · 25/08/2010 11:21

You're obviously not using the right sanitary products....Always promise you a ''Happy period.'' Wink

Sorry, that was a bit flippant...have forgotten what it's like as still waiting for them to return after DS2. Not looking forward to it though...

I have never posted in Feminism before so be gentle.

I have recently been thinking about getting a mooncup. Can you definitely not feel them when they're in as they look huge? I haven't had a baby (yet. That's part of the grand plan). I imagine myself waddling around like I have a bucket up my fanjo.

KatyMac · 25/08/2010 11:25

I think some of the pain is cramping as the blood passes through the cervix/down the vagina

With a mooncup at least some of that doesn't happen so less cramping

RamblingRosa · 25/08/2010 11:35

But the blood surely still passes through the cervix Confused?
I thought the pain was the uterus contracting and I can't see how the mooncup could help with that.

steamedtreaclesponge · 25/08/2010 11:35

You definitely can't feel them when they're in, Ariesgirl - they're like tampons, they sit high up enough that you don't know they're in at all.

RamblingRosa, how often you empty them out depends on how heavy your period is. Mine is normally quite light so I do it about twice/three times a day. You can leave them in for quite a long time as they don't have the risk of TSS (which is why you can't leave tampons in for long). They don't leak if you put them in properly although it can take a little bit of practice, just like the first time you use tampons.

Hello, Elephants! I lurk over here quite a lot but don't post much . To answer your question, I've been on a variety of pills over the years but am on Yasmin at the moment which suits me fine. It's good for your skin too if you're a bit acne-prone like me.

stirlingstar · 25/08/2010 11:41

Aries - you can get them in pre and post childbirth sizes - there are good guidelines on the packet/most websites about how to choose the right one.

You can't feel them once in - in the same way that you don't feel a tampon. They're not THAT big! And they are flexible, not a rigid bucket.

sethstarkaddersmum · 25/08/2010 11:41

they come in two sizes, Ariesgirl, 'unspotted virgin' and 'fanny like a bucket' Wink

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 25/08/2010 11:43

thefinerthings - I'm not sure you can make yourself enjoy them TBH, but you can do some things to make them better.

Get your painkillers sorted out, try some different ones. I use nurofen plus (have to get them from a pharmacy), and two of those taken when the cramps start mean they never really get going IYSWIM. If the pain starts while I'm asleep, and I've "missed the boat" on the painkiller taking window, it can still be agony and I have spent the wee small hours pacing around the kitchen more than once.

Never underestimate the power of heat - I used to take a small hot water bottle with me to work and keep it under the desk. People never really asked questions!

When you're not in pain, I think periods are all right. Sometimes I think about how it's something that I've got in common with women all over the world, it is a mark of my sex and the fact that I am an adult. Also it's something that women have had for so many thousands of years - Cleopatra had them, Elizabeth I had them, Florence Nightingale, Marilyn Monroe - whoever's your bag really!

CerealOffender · 25/08/2010 11:43

i can't imagine it makes much difference, i am still using the 'unspotted virgin' size which makes dd the messiah

CerealOffender · 25/08/2010 11:44

and wtf @ 'enjoying your period'.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 25/08/2010 11:44

SSM Grin Is that being gentle?

sethstarkaddersmum · 25/08/2010 11:46

they call them size A and size B but I can never remember which is which. They should use my names for them as they're more memorable.
They come in the same size box though so Cereal's probably right that it doesn't make much difference Grin

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 25/08/2010 11:46

longing to ring the mooncup hotline and ask for one of their "never even held hands" models.

Impressed, CO, when can we come and worship?
