Beko oven - sexist sh!t

Anyone seen the latest billboard ad campaing by Beko?

I saw one for their self-cleaning oven. Sexist shit it is.

I'll go take a picture of it tomorrow or Monday - its message is vile.

Says 'this oven isn't going to clean itself' but, lo and behold, it does! thus freeing up time for the two women pictured in the ad to be sat in the kitchen, drinking wine.

How lucky these women are to have time freed up when they could/should be cleaning their oven!

How great that they can be liberated from this to be sat in the kitchen, grasping each other's arm while drinking wine.

Sexist shit.

I'll upload a picture when I pass it again.

God, I forgot to add...

Arcelik!!!! You couldn't make it up.

And by them insulting their customer, shows what they really think of them. They'll take their money and that's where it begins and ends. Kerching.

Would it really have changed the message in the ad for them to have a man in it, relaxing in the kitchen?

But an oven that gives you more time to drink wine...surely it sells itself Grin

Ok it might not be right, but we all know that in real life, women are more likely to clean the oven, therefore any ad designed to sell a self cleaning oven needs to be aimed at women. If the oven cleans itself you/we/the target customer gets more leisure time. I bet the campaign is a huge success.

msrisotto · 23/08/2010 20:12

Actually, it isn't normal for everyone so I think it is damaging to women for the company to insinuate that only women cook and clean. It is making it the norm.

ISNT · 23/08/2010 20:17

Christ I've never cleaned the oven. DH has had a bash at it a couple of times.

i do not believe that we are freaks Grin

That's it mrsrisotto - it's presuming that a woman will say: "Oh wow, so much time freed up as I thankfully no longer have to clean the oven.

True - oven cleaning is a novelty in this house, but the ad makes it seem a necessity. For women.

Who the hell ever cleans their oven? What is the point of cleaning it its closed most of the time so you dont see the inside? This is only the kind of thing you would do for a cleaning job but not in your own home.

It will never be normal to be that anal you clean your oven lol.

Katiekitty · 23/08/2010 20:28

This from the Beko website (I know, I'm obsessed), re the self-cleaning, there appears to be a teensy bit of work involved, alas:

"Any burnt-on dirt is carbonized and simply turned to ash which can be easily swept away at the end of the cleaning cycle"

Sunny I clean my oven roughly once a when I can be arsed month or so. On the grounds that I let my last one get so full of grease that it caught fire Blush
If my current oven dared to suggest that cleaning it was my job due to my gender though, then it would be fuller of grease than a very greasy thing, and would have to take its chances in the flames. I'm working hard enough to avoid gender stereotyping DD without my appliances doing it for me (and she still refers to me as 'her in the kitchen Hmm).

sunny2010 · 23/08/2010 21:03

Lol whydobirds suddenly appear. I dont ever think this type of thing has been gendered in my upbringing. My mum has never used a washing machine, iron or baked anything. I never thought of learning it as I have never seen anyone do it. I suppose that is why I dont think things are gender related. The idea of my mum in the kitchen is enough to make me ROFL unless she was cooking me a marks and spencers ready meal or one of about 5 simple dishes. My dad can do anything though he is like Gordon Ramsey.

I remember when I had a boyfriend at 16 and he came round and brought his own iron to iron his shirt. I was so ashamed to admit my family didnt own an ironing board I said I would do it and my mum and me tried for 20 minutes to do it on the kitchen table. It looked terrible! That is the only time I have ever seen her attempt anything like that and never again! I do think there are some downsides to being like this though as I had to have my husband do so much for me when I first got married as I didnt know how anything that people think is normal worked such as using an iron or how to cook anything at all.
