feminist books in bookshops

I quite often go into charity/secondhand boookshops looking for feminist/women's interest books. I am usually disappointed.

I had given up completely given up on new bookshops like waterstones. I usually found that they would have c.5 'feminist' books hidden in some obscure corner.

However yesterday i was in a waterstones and there were shelves of feminist books.

So it has got me wondering- is this a one off in this store?

Has anyone else noticed a resurgence in feminist books in their local bookshops?

I think that it is really important that these books are on public display so that non-feminists may come across them by chance and be enlightened.

Great news. I think there will be a rise in interest in feminism over the coming years, because as dittany said "feminism is politics", and politics will become very important as the new government's cuts start to bite, and women start questioning what is happening in society.

I am one of those who voted Tory Smile, but I do think that the government will be attacking women, so it is always important to be politically aware and to be ready to oppose.

yes, people who work in bookshops rarely seem to know where to place or look foor feminist books. I was actually looking for 'half the sky' but it wasnt in the 'feminist section'- which was beside social work/sociology, it was in politics at the other side of the large floor.

maybe it is best for them to be mixed in with other genres though, than all bunched together.

The feminism books in my local bookshop are filed under "gender studies". I was encouraged to see that they stocked about a dozen copies of "Reclaiming the F-word".

The location of feminism books that I've come across in other bookshops is very variable - sometimes in sociology, history, academic etc. So it can take a lot of searching to find a book.

Fortunately, I am relieved to report that I haven't yet found feminism books filed under chick-lit.

hee haw

am in n america at the moment

went to a large chain waterstonesy type shop wanting to find some good old school feminist books - mainstream stuff, kate millett, dworkin, brownmiller, even germaine, wasn't picky

the shop had one small shelf, not quite a meter long called 'gender studies'

a fifth of it was given over to a book called the rules of the game, an insiders guide to the fascinating world of pickup artists

i laffed

as i said to the person who asked me if i found what i was looking for, it's kind of funny, reading across the shelf you get feminism, feminism, feminism...women are meatsocks

it's also funny that so much space was given to a book explaining how to mainpualte women in to having sex with you

ha bloody ha

well, at least we can laff about it i said

chibi · 21/08/2010 18:51

on the other hand, for all that i am in my roughhewn isolated northern lumberjack (and lumberjill) type hometown, there is a women's bookstore which has been quietly formenting feminism for at least 3 decades now

can you guess where i got my books from lol

I went into my local waterstones to buy the equality illusion. I couldn't find it so asked a member of staff who looked baffled.

I found it on a shelf with two other feminist books, tucked away in the corner, was very disappointed at the lack of books on the subject.

LOL LOL at juxtaposition of Beauty myth and What Not to Wear.

SGM it shoud be in front of What Not to Wear, you'll have to get through it and then see do you still want fashion advice.

About a year ago i went into my local indie/secondhand bookshop - a place I love - and asked them for the feminist section.
Amswer, from a young saturday-job girl - we don't do that anymore, people just aren't interested are they?

It's a great bookshop. It has books on how our alien forebears are discriminated against by the ape-o-centric factions in our society.
But people aren't interested in feminism?

maybe we should all go into our local bookshops and ask why they dont have a feminist section/enough feminist books?

If people are asking for them then maybe they'll put more out.

I'd hate to think of charity shops pulping feminist doonations because they dont think there's sufficient demand.

I was lucky to find a whole stack of feminism books in a charity shop. It was just after the end of final exams, so it was almost certainly the reading material of a women's studies student. A rare example of me being in the right place at the right time. I bought the lot for a few pounds, what a bargain!

I visited Waterstones a week or so ago to look for a couple of new feminist books; it took a while to find them, but I was quite pleased with the selection available.

What pleased me even more was finding Ariel Levy's "Female Chauvanist Pigs" under a completely different section, named: "Clever books for clever people" Grin

Maybe we have an undercover feminist working in the trafalgar square branch of Waterstones?!!
