Feminist films?

I've just watched "Mone Lisa Smile" which was set in the 1950's (America), Julia Roberts being a feminist role model at a finishing school. I liked it.

Do you know of any films with a feminist main character or a feminist angle?

Its a general observstion about this dpecific mn topic

msrisotto · 12/08/2010 18:26

Quite a negative one. At least it's about feminism. Look at the threads on other topics within mumsnet that get 10X the amount of responses than any feminism topic and bitch about that instead.

Appletrees, welcome. Are you thinking of starting your first new thread in the Feminism section? We are always interested to discuss new feminism/women's right's topics.

I took DS to see 'Street Dance 3D' and while watching it i thought of the Bechdel test. Bizarrely there are many convos between girls about dancing and future careers.

Ok, so she ends up with the hunky ballet dancer but it's not all about that.

That's quite sad isn't it?

msrisotto · 12/08/2010 18:48

It's sad that it's bizarre that a contemporary film has females talking about careers jesus christ whatever next!

He is totally hunky isn't he? I have the dvd (loser).

I don't think that's really true.with tespect. Yes sure it is all very smashing and worthy conversation. Well done.

No V. Have looked at history of topic and decided not to.

Jeanne Dielmann. Can't believe it's not been mentioned yet. Not the easiest film to watch tho

wubblybubbly · 12/08/2010 18:52

I want to say Dolores Claiborne. Can I say Dolores Claiborne? Confused

msrisotto · 12/08/2010 18:53

What's the big problem??? Do you want us to look at our feet and apologise for not focusing on the very serious issues all the time when there are a lot of serious issues very highly attended? Are you chastising other areas of mn for not being serious enough?

OP posts:
earwicga · 12/08/2010 18:58

Definately wubblybubbly.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/08/2010 19:09

I know what you mean, Apple. But I would rather people were signing it and talking about something else, than talking about that issue but not signing it. Usually, unless it's an open question like "what is your favourite saxophone solo?", threads only get loads of posts when there is some disagreement. What can anyone say about that except "trafficking is shit and has to stop"?

Mind you I think more people saying they'd signed would bump it up onto active threads more often, which would be a good thing.

But you know it's hard to know how feminists can win. If we talk about rape laws and transsexuals and surrogacy, which are all serious issues, then people call us humourless. Have a light hearted but worthwhile thread about films, and we're featherweights?

I actually couldn't watch Monster. It was awful.

OP posts:
ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/08/2010 19:15

It's not a film, but I love the West Wing for this. Unfortunately (still getting through all 7 series) there seem to be occasional islands of this in between concentrating on the male characters' feelings. But some of the scenes where the female chief of staff and the female surgeon general and the female national security advisor are working together, talking about bombs or elections or ethics (not, say, about boyz), really make my heart soar.

herjazz · 12/08/2010 19:15

Maya Deren's films also. I love meshes in the afternoon.

Another fave is fellini's nights of cabiria. V victimy and tragic but love they way she keeps coming back.. still some optimism at the end

Used to think of films like msk45 and I spit on yr grave as feelgood movies ;)

What's that fassbinder one? Bitter tears of wanda (or Petra) von camp? Or something like that

There's lots of v sinister, victmy films which I also find v interesting and engrossing for feminist debates / questions they provoke. Repulsion by Polanski being one of these

earwicga · 12/08/2010 19:35

Oh yes, most definately Monster! Brilliant film.

earwicga · 12/08/2010 19:37

And Nick Broomfield's interviews with Aileen Wuornos.

herjazz · 12/08/2010 19:42

I love that nick Broomfield doc on aileen wuornos

On subject of docs has anyone seen that film called southern comfort about female to male transexuals in Texas? Tis an amazing film. Was thinking about t'other day
