I'm sorry but WTF

MmeLindt · 09/08/2010 23:48

WTF indeed.

LimaCharlie · 09/08/2010 23:54

I didn't read in detail but there seemed to be lots of other stuff - zumba etc going on, just why the need for pole dancing Hmm

Sakura · 10/08/2010 05:51

"pole2pole magazine are a sponsor to this event"
not a joke Confused

HerBeatitude · 10/08/2010 12:43

I'm guessing that Amnesty International aren't officially sponsoring this... Hmm

foureleven · 12/08/2010 10:10

That is the most fucking ridiculous naive, uninformed, ignorant, inapproprite thing I have seen in quite a while. And that is saying something.

AnyFucker · 12/08/2010 10:19

Biscuit to them

SolidGoldBrass · 12/08/2010 20:54

Actually, I'm in favour of this. Because some women enjoy exhibitionism, sexual display, casual sex etc, it's actually important to include that sort of thing as something some women like (no more than anyone else do I think women should be compelled to engage in sexual display any more than they should be compelled to cover up and only have sex in Longterm Loving Relationships.)

poshsinglemum · 12/08/2010 22:06

Pole dancing is great fun and a good way of keeping fit. It's not just for the delectation of men.
I don't think it's going to do much about the situation in Iran however. It just reinforces to them that we are all slags. Shame that dance is seen as inappropriate but there you go.

foureleven · 13/08/2010 09:26

Its scary in fact, and Im sure if any of the men over there found out then it would fuel their feelings that women need to be kept under control else look how far they'll go...

loopyloops · 13/08/2010 09:32

I find this really offensive.

herjazz · 13/08/2010 09:43

Yeah- following on from what sgb said, I think it raises some v provocative questions. It juxtaposes v obvious oppression of women in Iran with the apparent sexual freedom and liberty of women in the west - which in itself is something of a paradox. One cannot escape the more uncomfortable elements of exploitation and objectification with pole dancing. Yet assumption is we are so much more liberated in the west.

onebatmother · 13/08/2010 09:46

BLIMEY.

I completely agree that a key point, which must be made clearly, is that it doesn't matter ONE JOT whether she is or is not guilty of adultery.

But way to completely derail a campaign with something already massively overloaded with meanings, and deeply contested amongst feminists themselves!

BestLaidPlans · 13/08/2010 09:56

What foureleven said. What an utterly depressing and misguided event.

LynetteScavo · 13/08/2010 12:31

So woman who are lucky enough to live in a society where they can express their sexuality are having an event so raise awareness of the ill treatment of woman in Iraq.

Are woman these woman not allowed to have views, or try to change the world because the participate in a hobby (sport?) that western feminists find offensive.

Or maybe we should start repressing woman in this country too.

onebatmother · 13/08/2010 15:53

Snort at sport.

It's inflammatory and utterly counterproductive - because it is so divisive. That is, if this is really about protesting against the treatment of women in Iran, rather than look-at-me showboating.

foureleven · 13/08/2010 15:57

lynette... 'start' oppressing women in this country..? I think that started a long time ago.

And the 'sport' thing. It is a sport when it is all about strength i.e. the chinese pole championships etc. But look at the clubs logo on the link... sport?
