Wondering what it would take for all the women on here to think "that's it, the work of feminism is complete!"

For me it would be:

...when 50% of MPs are women (worldwide Grin)

...when I can walk the streets at night feeling safe

...when no-one tries to give me any crap about being evolved to like pink etc

When kids are just kids, with their own individual personalities - not treated as separate species depending on their gender.

Yes, but it is ironic when somebody who is equalities minister is clearly not up to the job. If you had a brilliant woman in that position it might upset some apple carts.

ClimberChick · 10/08/2010 06:02

when men have the same paternity rights (employment benefits, leave etc.) as women.

Sakura · 10/08/2010 06:21

I've argued on here before ClimberChick that equal paternity rights for men might not work out well for women.
I can see it being used against women.

Some men will always leave women in the lurch as single mothers like they've always done.
And in other cases, it will most definitely be used in favour of men in court (it doesn't take much for a man to be regarded as a hero father, but anything a woman does- work, mental illness, poverty etc, is always used against her)

Just a little contentious that one.

ClimberChick · 10/08/2010 06:32

hmmmm, obv I think women should have more pregnancy related rights.

but just because there will be downsides, is not a reason for something (with great power and all that). What about the fact that many women end up being SAHM because it's only them that realistically can. Doesn't this leave more women financially vulnerable and cause them to remain in unhealthy relationships. Anyway severe digression OP, not sure I'm cut out for posting on feminist threads just yet.

Also very much agree with posters stances on articles that describe that a woman's marital status, kids and short description of their hair. Really hate it when they do this.

Sakura · 10/08/2010 06:39

Yes it's a big topic ClimberChik, This isn't the thread for it. You do sound cut out for posting on feminist threads though!! Smile

Sakura · 10/08/2010 06:40

It was me who caused the thread to digress not you and it is a contentious topic. I don't want to put you off Blush

When a woman F1 driver climbs the steps to the podium and on each step is standing a good looking young man wearing a tight teeshirt with 'Vodafone' or similar across his chest!

This would be the exact reverse of a situation I saw a few races back.

AbsOfCroissant · 10/08/2010 14:09

When there are no longer any reports on things like this kidnapped brides, because it doesn't happen any more

BlingLoving · 10/08/2010 14:19

I agree with you ClimberChick (sorry, still on the diversion). Men should have equal parental rights and responsibilities, and if that means that some women will lose custody in the case of a split, then that is the price I think we have to pay for equality. It shouldn't be "i'm the woman, I automatically get the children" but rather should be based on what is best for the children and the family as a whole.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 10/08/2010 14:51

...when articles about female children being married off, and sexual discrimination at work, are not grouped under the title "Weird News" if you can bear it ( see also Shakesville's archive of "odd news" shockers here)

When parents stop putting their toddler-aged daughers in "pageants" where they learn that beauty is the main criteria on which a girl/woman is judged.

minipie · 11/08/2010 17:59

when I hear men in their 20s and 30s discussing how they are going to juggle work and childcare

when I see equal numbers of men changing their name on marriage as women (or neither person changing their name)

when men are expected to remove their body hair, decorate their faces, and wear impractical shoes in order to be attractive (or, preferably, when women are not expected to do so)

when nobody ever, ever uses the words "women/men are just naturally better at [insert skill here] than men/women"

for starters...

minipie · 11/08/2010 18:01

oh yes and agree with ClimberChick about equal paternity rights.

comtessa · 13/08/2010 12:07

Yep, ClimberChick you took the words right out of my keyboard

sexybrunettemotherof5 · 14/08/2010 19:29

Oh I absolutely hate it when women are described as busty blonde mother of three etc in the media. Really pisses me off.
