Hooters in Cardiff

Apparently Hooters is going to be opening up in Cardiff City Centre info here

Recently the local council set up a questionnaire about Cardiff City Night Life and the AM Jonathan Morgan said of Cardiff Nightlife "It is still reliant on very large and cheap-looking night clubs. It lacks good quality restaurants and small cafe bars."

It reems ridiculous to me therefore that the council would happily allow Hooters to open up in the City when it clearly objectifies women and would make the city centre even less of an attraction for many women.

Perhaps if anyone from Cardiff reads this, and feels as I do, they could fill in the council questionnaire and mention the rise of strip clubs in Cardiff. you can also mail your objections to [email protected] but it needs to be done before 11th August.

How empowering can being a waitress at Hooters actually be? It isn't really up there with women gaining the right to vote or to receive equal pay.

I found gaining my degree fairly empowering and I funded my studies by being a waitress - not in Hooters I hasten to add.

How many women do you have on your board of executives?

msrisotto · 10/08/2010 16:03

Ilzette, everything you say makes me irritated. However, this in particular

"Any organisation that cares for and assists in the developement and empowerment of females in society should be applauded and not castigated."

Actually, any establishment which makes the objectification of women it's sole marketing goal should be castigated, picketed and protested against as it is sexist and detrimental to women. You clearly don't understand why this is a bad thing, I suggest you do some light reading:
www.object.org.uk/index.php/the-facts/faq

"just a sample of ex hooters girls,...."

Yes, women can be successful! What news. Hooters had nothing to do with their success. What it may have had influence on is their self esteem as they felt they had to fund their studies through allowing men to ogle them, pinch their bum etc etc. What it may have done is allow men/culture to believe that all women are just ornaments. Nice.

Hooters isn't only sexist it is deeply ageist too. How many 50 yr old waitresses do you employ? I am guessing none.

Hi there

I just wanted to say, if I haven't already, that I have been strongly advised by a local assembly member and by the woman who spearheaded the campaign against Hooters in Sheffield that the best way to object to this is not using the 'objectification of women' angle but by objecting to all the points which would be addressed in the licensing act. i.e the disruption/anti-social behaviour/noise/alcohol consumption etc.

There is a demo tomorrow which sadly I can't make as I am working but these are the details:

clicky

I am sure Emmeline Pankhurst would have found that empowering. Not.

I guess they "fit in" the same as the big knockers on the front of Nuts and Loaded

in the newsagent

in the family-friendly arcade

Hmm
msrisotto · 10/08/2010 21:53

So right AF. And it's kind of gutting to hear that protesting on the grounds of sexism probably won't work (bet it would if it were racism) so we should protest using other reasons such as antisocial behaviour etc. I guess that is the state of things though. Lovely.

DuelingFanjo · 10/08/2010 22:09

it is sad. the email I had said:

"Thanks for the email. Being reasonably well versed in the Licensing Act, I don't think that the objections based on the waitresses amount of clothing will succeed.

The application will be judged on the provisions of the Act, and will be open to appeal if ignored by the Licensing Committee. Unless there are grounds to refuse the licence, for example the police objecting over concerns of an increase in anti social behaviour, then it may be difficult to stop.

Sadly the powers in the Act are not as strong as they should be."

I don't understand who goes to these places except stag parties and similar groups. Once years ago on a US business trip with a load of men (engineers - sad geeks) I recall they were all sniggering away about going to Hooters, like a bunch of spotty 14 year olds.

What right minded woman would be seen dead going inside a "Hooters" let alone with her kids or parents? And yet they seem to claim its a family restaurant!

its interesting that there is only one of these place open in the UK, in Nottingham, although they have been in the US for years. I believe its on an industrial estate, so thank god you are not likely to walk past with your kids and have to explain. Hopefully they will NOT catch on over here.
