DD's are 17 and 15. Neither have had periods in over 6 months (6 months for the 15 yr old and 8 months for the older DD).

GP ran blood tests for the older one and everything came back fine. Told me not to be concerned and wait a few more monthS.

Should I be concerned?

Could they both have PCOS? My periods were v irregular particularly in teens and twenties and could often be v heavy.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/11/2023 11:21

I think that when people say that girls just after puberty can have irregular cycles, it doesn't generally mean no period at all for 6 months after having regular periods for a while! It doesn't sound normal to me at all.

The Covid vaccine affected my periods, but made them much heavier rather than disappear - I'm the age for that to happen anyway, but I'm convinced there was a vaccine effect.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/11/2023 11:22

You say they are average weight, but they both had a late puberty. Isn't it normally slighter girls who have late menarche?

It's something I'll be keeping an eye on, most certainly.

The older DD is more tall and willowy but my youngest is quite average - strong looking shape.

They've both had painful hormonal spit breakouts, sore breasts and abdomen in the month before it re-started again, but they've also now suffered from abnormally long periods.

They both had covid - twice each. They re fully jabbed but neither want to even entertain having another covid jab if it was offered.

A condition called polycystic ovaries cannot be ruled out here.

Blood tests done on the wrong cycle days can give misleading results. A day 2 test should be done to compare levels of LH against FSH, with PCO/S the level of LH is elevated compared to FSH.

I’m 25. Started my period at 12 and got on average 2 a year until I was 19/20 and it became regular. I was told it was quite normal and would regulate, which it did.

You were told it's quite normal, but did you have friends who had the same experience? Because I don't think it's that normal.

The only friend of mine who missed periods was anorexic.

Thanks @AttilaTheMeerkat .
I'll make a note of this.

@Gwenhwyfar yes it’s quite common. Normal is t a helpful word in these cases. Dd 23 started at 16 the had nearly 9 months without. All tests incl ultrasound was normal. More regular now. DD19 started at 14 and still skips odd months as I did in my teens/20s.

itsatravestyy · 27/11/2023 06:46

@Gwenhwyfar The exact same thing happened to my cousin who was the same age as me. She managed to have 2 kids whilst we were in our teens as well. My periods are now regular so I don’t think anything of it.

Seagrassbasket · 27/11/2023 06:46

The Covid thing is really interesting - I remember there was talk about it affecting periods but as far as I remember the studies showed it hadn’t. Mine have been quite irregular since about January but the last time I had covid was last year.

Glad your girls ones have come back OP. I have to say I wouldn’t have thought missing them for 6 months would fall under the ‘normal’ irregular periods for teens!

I know that women sync when they live together. Perhaps that applies if one stops.

Nah they don't. It's a well perpetuated myth. I believed it too until I tried to find out the science behind it and discovered it's a complete fallacy

DustyLee123 · 27/11/2023 07:07

Have they been checked for PCOS?

KateLawsonDidIt · 27/11/2023 08:42

You are a kind mum for being on this and caring.

This was me. Late to start - 15. Then they were infrequent and difficult when they came.

Later told had polycystic ovarian syndrome. Took the pill for several years but when I came off it nothing again

Late twenties took metformin which sorted things out enough to allow pregnancy. Everything was fine after that oddly.
