How do deal with heavy, painful periods?

I have known I have pcos for years but despite all the tests i had to get that diagnosis i have only just been diagnosed at the age of 39 with endometriosis. I have tried so many different things to handle my heavy, painful periods. I have had every different pad known to man, super jumbo tampons, I tried a cup, I am currently wearing period pants as well as a heavy duty ultra night pad, sat on towel so I don't stain the chair. I am taking ibuprofen which a GP told me is better for period pain than paracetamol. I usually have a hot water bottle but it's too hot at the moment to use one. I am on the implant which last time i had it bar one just after getting it like this one stopped all my periods so just am hoping it my last one for a good while. Does anyone have any magic remedies that don't require a prescription or going too far afield?

Your GP needs to refer you to a gynaecologist re the heavy bleeding (endometriosis can cause heavy bleeding to arise). A laparoscopy op is the usual way endometriosis is diagnosed.

If you have the means to go private for an initial consultation do so.

You should not have to put up with this because this can and does impact your quality of life day to day.

When did your lap op take place?

Chewbecca · 01/07/2026 15:41

I wish I had the mirena coil put in years ago.

I have a merina coil. Literally life changing and no periods at all. Mine were heavy and frequent before.

I haven't had one, I was just told on the phone that I have it after my most recent ultrasound. Just hoping my implant will do what it did before and stop my periods completely.

Tranexamic acid really works for reducing the bleeding. You can buy it over the counter, or it can be prescribed

You have not had a laparoscopy operation?. So how have they left things with you post this ultrasound you had, are they just leaving you to get on with it?.

Appalling if that is the case. If endometriosis is present it is not going to go away of its own accord, it should be lasered away or ideally excised. You also should ideally attend an endometriosis BSGE centre for treatment; these are located throughout the UK.

What @AntiHopsaid it is life changing and you can get it over the counter.

walkingmyway · 01/07/2026 17:27

Oh I didn’t see you haven’t had excision. I would be pushing hard for that at a BSGE centre, excision not laser
I had huge amounts removed

They just told me i had it. No invitation for a face-to-face appointment. No explanation about what it is or what can be done. Nothing said about treatment or help. That was it.

Please complain to PALS particularly if this ultrasound scan was done in a NHS hospital setting. Shocking treatment from them.
