Post menopausal bleeding and cyst

I’m on the two week pathway having had some bleeding and an internal ultrasound sound. It showed a small cyst with its own blood supply, and a thickened, cystic womb lining. I had to have an MRI yesterday of my pelvis area, and will have a hysteroscopy for a biopsy in a couple of weeks. I’ve had one before and found it challenging so will have a GA.

I’m worried as I had breast cancer 20 years ago. I took Tamoxifen, which can cause cancer, and I’m higher risk due to past history. The fact that the ovary has a blood supply is also a thing, and having to have an MRI worried me.

Any positive experiences to share?

No experience of any kind to share, but I send you my best wishes. This must be a worrying time for you. I hope you have some support around you while you wait for the biopsy.

How large is the cyst and is it complex?

Hihosilver123 · 21/06/2026 19:55

It’s very small - 8mm. Am waiting for MRI results to find out whether or not it’s complex.

I've been in the same boat with cysts, bleeding, ultrasound, hysteroscopy and MRI. It is really scary. It was all OK in my case. Fingers crossed it will be for you too.

Sort of in the same boat.
Had BC in 2018, chemo and smx, then tamoxifen for 5 years, tests then showed I’d gone through menopause so swopped to Ansastrozole. I now seem to have a PMB every sort of six months, each time I need to have an ultrasound, sometimes a hysteroscopy, and at some point I also had a cyst and a vaginal prolapse! Lovely isn’t it!

I’m actually having another ultrasound tomorrow as I had a bleed a month ago and they have now referred me back to the breast cancer team who I’m seeing on Tuesday. I’ve sort of made peace with the if it’s the drug making the bleeds happen, that’s fine, but what else can we do as it’s getting annoying now! I would actually accept a hysterectomy as my cancer was estrogen positive and I sort of feel let’s just remove as much as possible to hope it doesn’t return if that makes sense.

I think you should be positive, my experience is that our cancer teams are available and on it! The tests are nice but I kind of treat them like MOTs!

That’s really interesting to read. Thanks for sharing. My BC was 22 years ago so a long time being clear. I completely understand when you say a hysterectomy would be easier in some ways. As my endometrium is getting thicker, there’s clearly some oestrogen being produced somewhere and I won’t be able to take progesterone or have a coil because of my BC. Can’t see that it’s just going to resolve of its own accord. MRI results on Wednesday will give me an idea about the cyst at least, and whether that’s a worry too.

8mm is pretty small. I have had PMB and cysts, polyps and a biopsy etc. With cysts, they look for: vascularity, if it’s simple or complex and size. On the two week pathway they move super quick, so even if it’s untoward I expect they will whip the cyst out and if you have had children and are not looking to conceive again, would you be happy with a hysterectomy?

Hihosilver123 · 22/06/2026 05:38

I’m post menopausal so won’t be conceiving. I already know that the cyst is vascular as that showed up on the ultra sound. If a hysterectomy is recommended then I’m ok with that if it avoids a malignancy. Will know more on Wednesday and will then have biopsy.

So MRI showed that the ovary cyst is a benign tumour (thecoma) and that there are polyps in my womb. I will have keyhole surgery to remove the ovary and the polyps and they’ll biopsy everything just to be sure. A good outcome I think 👍🏽
