Why might I be sent for an MRI after ultrasound

I'm 48 and my periods started getting really heavy last year, still regular last 6 days but first day is unbelivably heavy so went to GP and was reffered to Gynae. Had a CT scan then ultrasound in December that identified I have thiickened endometrium and simple ovarian cysts. CA125 and CEA tests were low. Had a hysteroscopy and showed no abnormal cells and no cancer. Had a follow up ultrasound but radiographer said she could not see if I have endo or adeno due to anatomy? I had blood tests a month ago too to monitor the cysts and blood tests for tumor markers but now I'm being sent for MRI? Why would this be? Bit worried

An MRI scan can identify deep infiltrating endometriosis that an ultrasound cannot pick up- to be honest ultrasounds are not very good at spotting endometriosis at all, they just rule out other gynae issues such as cysts first like you describe.

i have stage 4 endometriosis and have had MRI scans to check the state of the endo before having laparoscopy surgery to excise it. Referring you for an MRI does not mean they suspect anything sinister, its more another diagnostic piece of the puzzle so please try not to worry. I know that is easier said than done xx

The same goes for adenomyosis too, very difficult to spot on an ultrasound but can be picked up on some MRI scans, but not always.

Hey, I was also sent for an MRI after an ultrasound for endo, it was just to get better images.

I can actually see my stomach pokes out where the cyst is and stomach is bloated. I have all the symptoms of endo and adeno. Thinking of privately funding a hysterectomy

It’s horrible isn’t it? I’m on the waiting list for surgery.

Aww it is awful. Sorry to hear you have all this too. Nothing fits. I had severe anaemia with it all and had to have a emergency blood transfusion. A private hysterectomy is 10k but don't think I can wait any longer..
Good luck and hope your surgery comes around soon. xx

I have a mirena coil now and it’s honestly been life changing - no bleeding, cramping, no PMS, I’m not anaemic any more and no awful side effects like I had with the pill. It’s made such a difference. If it’s an option for you while you wait for an op it’s definitely worth considering! X
