Saw my GP this week. Lump in boob with discharge. Referred to breast clinic and waiting to hear from them. Can anyone tell me what to expect? Really trying to stay away from Google and could use some words of wisdom. Long history of breast cancer in my family but feeling strangely calm.

So sorry to read this. I hope you know over 90% lumps are not cancer.
You are v wise to stay away from Google and consult breast cancer now if you want information- the bcn recommended them to me, and everyone on the long running v supportive cancer threads says the same.
Be prepared to be at the clinic a while- several hours is likely. Take snacks and something to distract you.
a doctor will see you first, then have tests- mammogram, maybe biopsies etc there and then.
usually the doctor/ consultant will be able to give you a good indication of your diagnosis on the day.
Try and stay busy, and as soon as many folk say, not knowing is the very hardest time( I agree, lumpectomy, chemo and radio here) . Treatment can be challenging, there is lots of support,
Good luck.

I had my appointment at the breast clinic today.
Today is day 17 from referral to seeing the breast clinic just to give you an idea for appointment time although it may be quicker in different areas.
Have you told anyone? It's important to have someone who you can share any feelings with.

You've done all the right steps to get seen, and they will treat you with modesty and kindness. I was advised I could be there up to 2 hours but was given the all clear in 20 minutes with an ultrasound.

I'm sorry you're having to go through this experience, it is an upsetting time but you will get answers when you go to the clinic. There are other things that it could be too. I don't really have any words of wisdom,
I hope it's good news for you OP, fill the waiting days with as much distraction as you can.

Mine was;

  • mammogram
  • physical exam
  • sent for ultrasound, but they then called me for another mammogram on the breast with the lump first.
  • ultrasound, along with biopsies.

Increasingly more serious as it progressed through each stage.

All done on the day, advised that it was almost certainly cancer but they needed to wait for the biopsy results to confirm (it was - lumpectomy, radiotherapy and now estrogen inhibitor drugs for 5 years).

This was Sep 2025, I had to wait 3.5 weeks for the initial appointment after the GP referral.

Most referrals are not cancer.

Good luck.

Thank you. It is amazing how long everything takes. Two weeks to get a gp appointment despite them knowing it was for a lump, and three days after that appointment and still havent heard from the breast clinic. Always thought it was really quick.

Sorry to hear this @tillyfilth. I am also waiting on the breast clinic and am going tomorrow. This is my second lump and the first one was benign. Also family history.
i would put in a complaint to your GP though - thats appalling. I emailed mon on day after I found it (thats how they triage ) and I had a phone call saying they had referred me 20mins later. I got lucky on appt so I am seeing them 5 days after referral
