Hysteroscopy GA

Just want to say I gad hysteroscopy under GA as I found after reading many stories that it can be painful. Especially for women who haven't birthed a child naturally. I spoke to gynaecology and the consultant agreed aga would be best for me. There two ladies having them done under GA when I went. I went in at 7.30 was done at 10.30 home at 13.30 no pain afterwards and hardly any bleeding only a tiny amount. Had polyps removed and biopsy Just thought I'd put my story out there in case it helps anyone.

Would they have let you stay in if you hadn't had anyone to bring you home/stay with you overnight? Or would they have cancelled the procedure? (Or let you go home anyway after a while of watching you?)

Good for you. Xxx

I had a hysteroscopy with 5 biopsies taken with no medications whatsoever-not because I’m a superwoman/against pain relief/ martyr but simply because that was how it worked out.
It wasn’t painful as such it was uncomfortable but it was manageable - and can’t compare it to childbirth because I’ve had 3 sections, but if anyone reads my reply it might help allay their fears.

Same here. Best option for me.

I’ve had one without GA and my screams could be heard in the waiting room apparently. I’d rather give birth or have gallstones again than forego a GA with that procedure. They tried to persuade me to do without GA for my first one after I’d given birth - not a chance. It’s fucking medieval - well done OP 👍

I think they would have let me home as I was there with another lady older than me and they let her go home alone

oh that's good to know, thanks. I know some hospitals are insistant on you having someone with you and at home for a GA, even if it's just for ten minutes and you have it in the morning or something. And for sedation for other procedures, they are very clear that if you can't find someone to bring, you have to have it without sedation or they will cancel it. It's a hard choice for people who live alone! (I'm not quite at the point of being referred for either procedure yet, but I think it could be coming)

Spire hospital wouldn’t let me go home unaccompanied. I was willing to lie and say someone was meeting me outside then book a taxi but my mother felt guilty and came for me! Total waste of her time, we got the bus home and went shopping on the way 🙄 have previously had major surgery under GA so didn’t expect any reactions to it

I had one a couple of weeks ago with a biopsy. I did not opt for GA as there was a longer waiting time & I had some worrying symptoms. It was absolutely fine & what helped is that I knew I can manage it.

It’s good to hear that some women have a more positive experience, however I do believe that everyone is different and that if some women find it painful it is absolutely fine to ask for a procedure to stop and to be offered a GA. Like childbirth, they don’t give out gold medals for suffering and pain relief then is also an option, and some women do find hysterscopies very painful. I did and it wasn’t even about coping, it was more about passing out, medically it’s referred to as a ‘vasovagal syncope.’
