I had some blood tests done as feel a bit tired lately and my joints, especially feet, legs and shoulders hurt for about 2 months.
I'm post menopause 52y old.
My ferritin is 51 however results says borderline and needs repeating test
( my feritin was always low in 20s values for last 15 years and I was never offered any iron pills etc, now its actually 51 and says borderline.
Same for B12- last year it was 280- result said Normal, no action required.
Today is 385 and says borderline, repeat.
Kidney function- according to test numbers is all normal, however says again borderline and to be repeated.
So I'm very confused.
I rang the surgery, they didn't know.

There is some abnormal result on my thyroid test, could anyone explain please?

I had FBC taken too and folate , its normal.
My Vit D is 51 which is truly borderline as the range starts on 51 and it is marked normal.
So i don't understand...

the whole batch has been marked abnormal because the t4 is very slightly low (on it's own that doesn't particularly mean anything though). The results need interpreting in context by the person who ordered them.

AnnaMagnani · 20/05/2026 15:13

As above the whole batch has been marked abnormal because of the thyroid result.

Kidney function and B12 are normal.

You should probably supplement Vit D as it's hard in the UK to achieve a normal level due to lack of sun.

You could also try supplementing iron as most people feel better with a ferritin over 100.

Thank you.
I tried to get appointment but nothing available for 8 weeks.
so what does the result of thyroid mean?
its weird as last year I had a slightly low kidney GFR (75 ) and all the other results were marked normal, even the actual gfr was marked satisfactory no action needed.
So what is the thyroid low value mean actually for me?
is it dangerous? I can’t find anything about it even on chat gpt says it must been marked by error’s

I can’t get anyone to tell me what to do or what does it actually mean?
Gp receptionist said she is not medically trained and no dr appointments for months hence asking here..
All I had was tiredness and sore joints, I had phone appointment with GP few weeks ago who ordered the bloods. thats all..

The only one low is the free TS4 but the serum TSH is normal. Could be an under active thyroid if it continues and other level becomes abnormal but it prob just needs repeating in a month or two?

source: not a doctor just have an under active thyroid

AnnaMagnani · 20/05/2026 17:01

I suspect the most the GP is going to do regarding the thyroid result is recheck in 2 to 3 months

Mayforeverr · 20/05/2026 18:00

Im even more confused, thanks God for the Nhs app where I can view my previous results.
I just went back as to 2009 and I always had this same values on my thyroid panel, sometimes even lower as Tf4 was 9.5 and it always was marked aa normal.
Also some range value changed, 10 was considered normal, probably depends on the lab, however i always had mostly 11.5-12..

Awful

How are you looking for appointments? Surgeries now book almost all appointments themselves according to urgency rather than letting you just book an appointment yourself.

Send an e-consult along the lines of 'I would like an appointment with a doctor to discuss my recent blood test results. I am still feeling tired and have joint pains and would like to know if the blood tests found a reason, or if I need further tests'

Mayforeverr · 20/05/2026 19:54

I do usually online form at 8am in morning and they decide by triage if urgent..
But on this occasion I called them today and she said straight away that I need to do 8am online form but I insisted on the flagged tests results to speak to gp so she searched but couldn’t find anything…

They probably just want to repeat to check your t4 level comes up a bit and is normal next time. I wouldn’t worry about it, if anything was urgent they would have contacted you. Tiredness and achy joints can be a sign of under active thyroid.

AnnaMagnani · 20/05/2026 20:19

It has to go through the form - there will be appointments earlier but they aren't released for general booking.

Whatever you do, don't submit the form on a Monday or the Tuesday after the Bank Holiday. They'll be swamped.

Sometimessmiling · 20/05/2026 20:24

Can you send e mail to surgery asking them to explain the results or could someone phone you?.

Mine were similar and was put on thyroxin. All good.
I thank my lucky stars that at my doctor's surgery phone at 8 am, maybe on phone waiting for a while but always same day appointment. 8 weeks is ridiculous.

Occasionalsnaccident · 21/05/2026 07:58

I think test results go into a work queue for review and then they’ll say either follow up app or rebook to take another sample? If they don’t have this system they usually tell you what to do at the time of the initial appt?

AltitudeCheck · 21/05/2026 08:05

One result (T4) is mildly out of range which flags the batch as borderline. It's not urgent and they'll probably file it or repeat in 2-3 months. A blood test is a snap shot and it's not uncommon for one result to occasionally be outside the 'normal' range. That 'normal' is what 90% of the population would be, so 1 in 10 are 'normally' outside that range.

Thatsanotherfinemess1 · 21/05/2026 08:14

as you aren't able to ask your GP I would upload the results to chat gpt and ask it. It is surprisingly good at explaining exactly what each result means, what the optimum levels should be and how the results affect each other. This isn't alternative to medical advice but could help you understand while you wait months for an appointment
