Clothing after hysterectomy

Flowerpower70 · 17/05/2026 14:56

I have a hysterectomy scheduled in June.
One of the nurses suggested comfortable clothes for journey home I live in the countryside so a 2 hour drive home. Ex is kindly driving. Not looking forwards to the drive as it might be uncomfortable on the stomach.
I had black tights and a stretchy dress on for preop but it will be June and so might be too hot. I have some wide legged black river island trousers but no idea what to wear on my feet... trainers I have some black sambas but would like black sandals and don't know where to buy them....

My friend found joggers the most comfortable, a size up than she’d normally wear. Lose around the waist and easy to get on and off.

I wore a smock dress when I had mine.

then wore jersey shorts (folded down at the waist) and oversized t shirts at home. Primark is your friend!

I also had mine in June!

Your stomach will be really swollen afterwards.

Joggers one size up from usual are generally a good shout.

I am not sure how much it matters what shoes you wear whilst being driven? I would be more concerned about minimising abdominal discomfort. A tight waistband for two hours in a car would be really unpleasant.

If you can, just wear a dress and avoid wearing trousers. Take big/long socks if your legs get cold. I had a laproscopy and couldn't put trousers on as they touched my incision sites. Some women can stand it, I couldn't. Take a few options and see how you go maybe? Take a small suitcase. Lots of ladies in the pre-op waiting room had them.

Don't wear trainers as you won't be able to bend over comfortably to do up the laces. Wear something like fit flops or sandals you can slip on,
Take a spare pillow in the car, put it over your incision and then put the seat belt on over the pillow.

I'm waiting for a surgery date at the moment but already have huge amounts of abdominal pain so am well used to wearing comfortable clothes. Very stretchy trousers are good but loose dresses are better. Even very loose trousers can dig in when sitting down.

I wouldn't worry about what's on your feet but would decide on something you can put on easily without bending down.

Take a pillow to put between your abdomen and the seat belt.

And perhaps schedule in a stop en route to move your legs, walk a bit. This will prevent gas and discomfort.

Have you got help at home?

Hopefulsalmon · 17/05/2026 19:47

I would recommend a loose dress - I wouldn't have wanted anything with a waistband. Also second a soft pillow for the journey home.

Twasasurprise · 17/05/2026 19:47

High waist, stretchy joggers are ideal. How long are you expecting to stay in? Is it laparascopic or abdominal? YY to slip-ons/ sliders.

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/05/2026 19:50

Knickers - either big ones that go over the incision or little ones that sit under. I had a long vertical incision so wore the little ones

cinnamonmilkandhoney · 17/05/2026 19:54

Not hysterectomy but big lap op
I wore stretchy high waist joggers (travelled in them) and big knickers with slip on UGG boots
came home in the same outfit
I wedged my cardigan between me and the seatbelt
worst bit was the speed bumps out the hospital!

AllThoseDreams · 17/05/2026 20:03

I had an abdominal hysterectomy and I actually found that after the first couple of days it was really comfortable wearing tummy control pants when I was walking around.

InterestingDuck · 17/05/2026 20:14

Big, comfy pants
Pull-over-the-head or front fastening bra
Loose dress
Slip-on shoes
Pillow in car to hold over your wound/cushion against seatbelt

You feel bumps in the road really badly so if there is smooth, pothole free route home, ask the driver to go that way.

ChasingCatsNotCars · 17/05/2026 20:15

As well as comfy clothing - I wore loose yoga pants and top - have a pillow for journey home. Put it between you and the seatbelt to provide some cushioning so belt not tight against your tummy

SuperSugarHigh · 17/05/2026 20:52

Flip flops or sliders for your feet (you’ll probably have compression stockings on but they have open toes so flip flops work), then loose ‘loungewear’/pj type clothing in a light material but ideally in a dark colour in case you bleed on them. I sized up so there wouldn’t be pressure on my tummy and made sure they sat around my waist as opposed to hips. Definitely not anything like tights, and BIG pants that ideally come right up to your ribcage. Didn’t bother with a bra, tried but I think I was so full of CO2 I couldn’t do it up!

Soft cushion to tuck under the seatbelt for the drive home.

Moonlightfrog · 17/05/2026 20:53

I came home in primark jogging bottoms and my nightie. I didn’t really care what I looked like at that point.

I then lived in dungarees for 2 weeks.
