Should I keep my ovaries during hysterectomy at 57?

I am 57 and still get periods. I am scheduled for a hysterectomy next month due to heavy bleeding and other issues. Surgeon wants to remove ovaries as well since she says at my age they aren’t doing much but my understanding is that even after menopause they release small amounts of helpful hormones. I am having difficulty with this decision. Is there anyone out there with a similar situation who can share thoughts or insights? Thanks

Personally, I would have them taken out, one less cancer worry. I had prolapse surgery a while ago and asked about a total hysterectomy but my consultant said it would probably cause further prolapses.if I did.
I would still have them removed in your position though

Ovarian cancer is the silent killer even when caught early so I would have them out.

I had my ovaries removed 9 years ago because they were pre cancerous and my ovaries were very big. im on hrt . I'm at an age where my periods would have stopped naturally. I obviously get all my hormones from the hrt but I am fine. I also haven't got any of the testosterone dominance symptoms my mum and sisters have. I know some ladies get symptoms from low testosterone but I haven't. I had a short period where I couldn't take the hrt and I was fine no hot flushes or feeling like my hormones were upping and downing. I'd take your doctors advice. My mum still has hot flushes and shes in her 80s.

I had mine out with total hysterectomy at 53. I was pre menopausal and really worried about going into immediate surgical menopause. But not ever worrying about ovarian cancer is lovely and definitely glad I made that choice.

My mum had a hysterectomy and was told best to keep an ovary to stop the need for HRT etc, this was a long time ago now so advice may or hopefully has changed. My mum ended up with ovarian cancer that had spread everywhere, she found out and 2 months later has died. It’s a silent killer so any chance to have them removed I would.

I‘m getting one of mine out soon, potentially both - have history of ovarian cancer on both sides of my family (not the reason I’m having it out) and the consultant explained that my risks of ovarian cancer will reduce by 50% automatically and obviously by 100% if they do decide to take both.
im 41 and feeling like menopause may still be a while off for me yet (could be wrong of course, mum went through it mid 50’s) so I think I’d like to keep one for now purely for the hormones…
Worth talking through with your consultant or surgeon, whoever you are in contact with.

The consultant recommended total removal during mine for the reasons pps noted above. No regrets.

I had a total hysterectomy at 55, 9 years ago, and my ovaries were removed. I was still having periods, and I went straight into surgical menopause.
It was fine, I felt so much better and I never felt the need for HRT. I'm so pleased to be free of all that PMS, ovulation pains and the fear of cancer.

I had a hysterectomy at age 50 and was advised to leave my ovaries, which I did. A few years later my lovely sister died from ovarian cancer. She’d had no symptoms whatsoever, and she died just 3 weeks after the diagnosis.
I didn’t hesitate to get my ovaries removed after that, and I paid privately to have it done rather than having to jump through hoops and wait for ages with the NHS.
The upshot was that I ended up having two major surgeries instead of just one. I really regret not having my ovaries removed the first time.
If you’re worried about hormones you should consider HRT. I wouldn’t be without it.

I’m obviously the outlier here!
I had a hysterectomy at 62 ,I had ongoing post menopausal bleeding.I had hormone sensitive breast cancer, lot of problems due to lack of oestrogen once on Tamoxifen.
I looked into it and found the same as you, that even post menopause the ovaries release some hormones, and I really didn’t want to have any more/ new side effects because of losing those.
My surgeon wasn’t happy! But I did bring her proper” articles from professional journals, not just a random opinion off the internet…she wasn’t interested in discussing them with me but did leave my ovaries in place ( she showed me a picture after the surgery 😁)
I felt I had informed myself of the pros and cons and that was what i wanted to do.So far I am fine, I hope not to develop ovarian cancer in future but I still had to make what felt like the best decision for me at the time.

I think I would keep mine too.
