Hello, my period came on time, but I've been bleeding heavily and passing a lot of clots like the image shows. I'm changing pads every 1-2 hours. Is this a normal bleed or should I be speaking to a doctor...

Hi OP, that looks pretty similar to all of my periods personally so I wouldn’t be worried

Checkpoint2 · 16/04/2026 20:27

That would be very normal for me as a 52 year old perimenopausal woman. For two days I bleed really heavily, clots twice that size sometimes 😩

niknak939 · 16/04/2026 20:27

Thank you for your reassurance

Doesn't matter if its normal for randomers on the Internet. Is it normal for you? Doesn't sound like it. Could just be a dodgy month, if you start to feel faint/weak, ill in any way, go to hospital, have someone drive you or call an ambulance, you shouldn't drive in that situation. Or see your gp in the morning otherwise, you can call 111 if you dont have a gp.

ihavetocookagain · 16/04/2026 20:28

I’d be concerned if it was abnormal from your usual periods. That said periods change. Perhaps put all you concerns and what you class as normal into chatgpt/google and see what they suggest.

Thank you all I shall get advice from a professional as I'm not normally passing clots and I'm very anemic ATM too

The clot size won’t worry me but changing pads every hour would. I would try and get an emergency GP appointmemt for tomorrow.

orangina01 · 16/04/2026 20:35

I am very anaemic (currently at one of my highest ever number, 13.4!) and this is very normal for me. It usually calms down after day 3 of my period.

EnglishRain · 16/04/2026 20:40

I had an iron infusion last year and my periods have been lighter since. As weird as it is, you can have heavier periods when iron is lower! Tranexemic acid has hugely reduced my bleeding too (I was on that before the iron infusion). It might be worth speaking to GP about in case it helps stop the anemia worsening?

Agree that if this isn’t normal for you seek some help.

WonderingWanda · 16/04/2026 20:41

I think being anaemic can make the periods worse which then increases blood loss and worsens the anaemia. Definitely speak to your gp. I thought my very heavy periods were due to Peri but a year of using transexamic acid (I wasn't anaemia my ferratin was really low) has made a huge difference. Nails have stopped snapping and periods have got lighter again.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 16/04/2026 21:49

I would speak to your gp about this matter as this is a change to your normal.

May I ask how old you are ?.

tobermoryisthebestwomble · 16/04/2026 22:09

Again, that wouldn't be unusual for me. If you are regularly passing clots bigger than a 50p piece you should see your GP.
