What tests might follow a breast lump referral at hospital?

My daughter , 25, found a lump in her breast, and after two dr appointments, has been given an appointment at the hospital for mammogram etc. She’s been told to allow 4 hours.
Can anyone tell me what other tests they may do (I’ll be with her) and is this just precautionary or something to worry about?

I’ve been a couple of times. I had a needle biopsy. If she’s offered local anaesthetic, take it.

I’ve just been for a similar referral. I had further mammograms, an ultrasound scan and then a vacuum assisted biopsy.

Depending on what the mammogram shows she could have a physical examination by a doctor, an ultrasound scan, a needle biopsy. If it is a breast clinic they are usually able to get a lot done on the same day which is why she has a long appointment.

When I went it was a series of different rooms a bit like a conveyor belt lol. Go in one door have a physic exam and dr marked breasts where he could feel lumps. Get gowned up and then go out a different door and sit in another waiting room. I had an ultrasound, I was told mammogram wasn’t suitable due to age and density of breast tissue so your DD being young could well be the same. Back to another room for the consultant to review the scans. Mine was all fine but if there was a concern I believe I’d of been sent to the next room for a biopsy. My DH was with me for the first physical exam but after that he waited in the lobby whilst I did the rest. I was probably only 2 hours but I can understand how it could take longer if you needed the biopsy or further chats with consultants about next steps etc

at 25 I would expect her to go straight for ultrasound with a breast consultant (radiologist or advanced. Practitioner radiographer). If it is a cyst they may get to aspirate it for her (especially if it is painful). If they need further information, they may ask her to have a mammogram or take a biopsy, or both. This will all be done on the same day but does not mean it is anything to worry about. Biopsy results will take a few days to come back so the day may not be conclusive.

I have app at the breast clinic at a major hospital this Friday, 9/10 lumps are fine. I am trying to tell myself its to rule anything else out. I wish I could take my mum with me.
Hope your daughter is ok, im incredibly anxious, sending hugs.

Thanks all. She’s quite anxious about a potential mammogram as she has small boobs, so hopefully she won’t have to do that.

Update. The lump is a fibroadenoma. Small (17mm) and benign. Because of her age they recommended a biopsy anyway, which she agreed to, and results come back in about 10 days.

That's great news OP, what tests did she end up having?

supersop60 · 07/04/2026 22:44

She had an ultrasound and after much discussion, a biopsy. No mammogram because they’re not so useful on young dense breast tissue.
