My coils has gone walkies - anyone with recent experience?

Had a check up on Friday for something else and it's come to light my coil strings have gone walkies. Her face when I said I have a copper coil 😳 . It was an experienced SH nurse with a bright light thoroughly inspecting my nether regions so if there had been a hint of a string, she'd have seen it!

Anyway, I've been advised to be careful until it's found. Anyone with recent experience to give me an idea of how long it might take for a scan? Honestly, I've not a clue when I last felt them 😳

I had this years ago. I was already menopausal, so didn’t need it for contraception, and was advised it could stay wherever it had disappeared to as long as it wasn’t causing problems. Several years later I had some spotting and it was decided to remove it. I had it done in hospital under mild sedation - didn’t feel
a thing and was good as new the next day.

How are you supposed to “be careful “ ffs?! This is exactly why I will never have a coil!

HoneyNutsandLoops · 30/03/2026 20:36

Mine just fell out after a few years in place resulting in a third DC! Apparently they can do that.

Eh this can happen

InflagranteDelicto · 30/03/2026 20:37

Exactly. There's still a small risk of pregnancy with my age and I do not want to start taking the pill- there was a reason it's a copper coil! Even if DH changed his mind about a vasectomy, it's still months before the risk is minimised. Which leaves condoms- not my idea of fun 🙄

Already had occasional sparse spotting after sex (hence the MOT down below)

At this point I'd just like to know if it's in or out!

im on my second baby and getting on fitted soon

Ive had three over the years and ejected every single one. I must have a loose cervix or something.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 30/03/2026 20:46

I got pregnant with my third child as a result of a loose coil they’re not full proof!!!!! I know at least 4 other women this has happened too aswell.

Mine went missing but was still in and working fine (I knew it was as my periods had stopped and I’d figured they would have come back if it had come out).

I had it removed using ultrasound to guide the doctor in the end and wasn’t too painful (just not nice). Hopefully a scan will show it’s in the right place!

I had the same, I’ve just checked my calendar, it was about 6 weeks between realising that the strings were missing and a transvaginal scan that showed the coil was still in place but the strings were embedded in my endometrium.
It was then ages before I eventually got it removed, partly because I asked for it to be removed under GA. That was a really good decision as it was quick, straightforward and painless.

My strings went walkies too.

Went for a smear and nurse asked about contraception...I said I had a coil, she looked confused, had another look, said she couldn't see the strings, so advised condoms to be on the safe side.
She arranged via the Dr for an ultrasound to see if the coil was still in place or had indeed gone off somewhere.

Has US not long after, coil was still in place, doing its thing. Just no visible strings.
Was told removal likely to be a challenge.
That was 2 years ago.

Recently started spotting, so had a check up and the strings were "just" visible .
Nurse managed to guide them gently down.

Nothing to say they might go for a wander again when it's due out mind you.
